About the Opportunity
Join Invest NZ, a new autonomous Crown entity dedicated to boosting international investment into New Zealand to drive economic growth, innovation, and productivity. This role offers the exciting chance to establish and lead the communications function from the ground up, shaping the organisation's narrative and public image.
Role Overview
Located in Auckland or Wellington, this dynamic position combines strategic leadership with hands-on communication work. As the first Communications Lead, you will collaborate directly with the Chief Executive and the leadership team to provide counsel on communication strategies, craft high-quality ministerial briefings, manage media inquiries, and oversee content including the newly developed website.
Key Responsibilities
- Design and implement Invest NZ's communication strategies and priorities.
- Advise the Chief Executive and leadership team on communication approaches.
- Prepare ministerial briefings, speeches, talking points, and formal correspondence.
- Lead media relations, reputation management, and responses to issues.
- Oversee website content, digital communications, and other key collateral.
- Support internal communication and engagement within the organisation.
- Forge and maintain strong relationships with government, business, media, and partners.
- Develop systems and processes to support organisational growth and maturity.
Candidate Profile
We are seeking an experienced communications professional with a proven ability to work effectively across government and commercial sectors. The ideal candidate will possess strong judgment, excellent writing and editing skills, and the agility to switch between strategic advice and operational execution.
Applicants should have:
- Experience in strategic, corporate, or public sector communications.
- Strong writing capabilities with the skill to simplify complex information into engaging communication.
- Familiarity with government operations, including ministerial processes, Official Information Act responses, and public accountability.
- A good understanding of business, investment, or economic development environments.
- Experience managing media relationships and maintaining organisational reputation.
- Proven digital communication skills, including website management and development of customer-facing materials.
- The ability to work autonomously, handle competing priorities, build effective relationships, and influence outcomes.
- Sound judgment, political awareness, and composure under pressure.
