About the Role
As Chief Knowledge Officer at the Ministry of Business, Innovation and Employment (MBIE), you will be responsible for overseeing the entire enterprise data, knowledge, analytics, and economic insight capabilities. Your role combines data strategy, architecture, platforms, governance, knowledge management, advanced analytics, and insights, transforming information into trusted knowledge that supports improved decision-making and outcomes for New Zealand. You will report to the Deputy Secretary Corporate and Digital Shared Services and lead the Data, Knowledge and Analysis branch. Collaboration across government, academia, industry, and Māori communities is essential to strengthen system-wide knowledge and analytical expertise.
Key Responsibilities
- Provide strategic guidance to MBIE’s Senior Leadership Team and lead the Empowered by Data roadmap.
- Position MBIE as a knowledge-driven organization by ensuring that information, data, and insights are governed and integrated as strategic assets.
- Develop a comprehensive knowledge management framework to enhance institutional memory, organizational learning, and regulatory compliance.
- Advance capabilities and maturity in data, analytics, and knowledge management while fostering an evidence-based decision-making culture.
- Build strategic partnerships and establish MBIE as a recognized leader in public sector knowledge stewardship and data governance.
Required Skills and Experience
- Executive-level leadership experience managing enterprise-wide data, analytics, evaluation, information, and knowledge management functions, with expertise in governance frameworks and emerging trends.
- Track record of leading large, multidisciplinary teams within complex organizations.
- Proven ability to develop and execute enterprise strategies leveraging data and knowledge to improve decision-making, innovation, performance, and public value.
- Strategic, systemic thinker able to connect government priorities, economic and social developments, and organizational goals to identify opportunities and risks.
- Strong communication and influencing skills capable of engaging senior leaders and navigating across organizational boundaries.
- Enthusiasm for innovation, including AI, automation, and advanced analytics, applied ethically and responsibly.
- Tertiary qualifications or significant senior management experience in public or private sectors.
