About the Team
The Plaster Service Team comprises a Band 5 Senior Orthopaedic Cast Technician, Band 4 Cast Technicians, and Allied Health Assistants, working collaboratively with medical, nursing, and physiotherapy staff. Positioned within the physiotherapy service of the Tasmanian Health Service-South (THS-S), this team facilitates integrated care across various health settings to maximize patient outcomes.
Role Overview
We seek an enthusiastic Cast Technician for a casual role to join our busy Plaster Service Team, providing expert care for patients at THS-S. The main duties involve applying casts to orthopaedic and plastic surgery referrals, serving inpatients at Royal Hobart Hospital, outpatient referrals from general practitioners, and patients needing total contact casts. Supervision is both direct and indirect from medical practitioners, a Senior Cast Technician, and a Musculoskeletal Team Leader Physiotherapist, with close collaboration involving physiotherapists, allied health assistants, and other cast technicians.
Key Responsibilities
- Prepare, apply, modify, remove, and mold casts, including complex technical tasks such as fractured limb positioning and basic wound care.
- Educate patients on appropriate cast care and maintenance.
- Maintain accurate records and gather activity data relevant to services provided.
- Follow infection control standards and ensure the cleanliness and security of the cast room.
- Communicate effectively with multidisciplinary healthcare team members.
Requirements
- Proven experience and knowledge in casting techniques, including deformity correction, fracture stabilization, ulcer protection, and skin graft management.
- Physical capability to assist in handling and repositioning patients safely during casting procedures.
- Ability to exercise initiative, independent judgment, adaptability, and adherence to safe work practices within a multidisciplinary team environment.
Additional Information
- This is a fixed-term casual position for approximately 24 months, commencing as soon as possible, with working hours to be negotiated.
- The role may fill subsequent or related vacancies (full-time, part-time, casual) for up to twelve months following this recruitment process.
- Salary is between AUD 85,196 and 97,915 per annum on a pro rata basis, with a 12% employer superannuation contribution, following the Public Sector Unions Wages Agreement 2025.
- Desirable qualifications include Certificate IV in Cast Technology or equivalent, and a minimum of two years' experience as a cast technician.
