Care Assistant

Role Objective

We are seeking a Care Assistant to provide compassionate and person-focused support enabling individuals to lead fulfilling, autonomous lives. In this role within a residential setting in Castlecomer, you will be part of a committed team delivering care that respects personal dignity, choices, and uniqueness.

Work Location and Hours

This position is based at a residential facility in Castlecomer, Kilkenny. It offers full-time hours on a shift schedule that includes evenings, overnight (sleepover), and weekend cover.

Key Duties and Responsibilities

• Offer personalised, high-quality support tailored to individual goals and preferences.
• Fulfil the Key Worker role by aiding in planning, implementing, and reviewing individual support plans.
• Promote autonomy and skill development to help individuals maximize their potential.
• Assist with daily living tasks, including personal and intimate care.
• Facilitate community inclusion and encourage participation in activities and new experiences.
• Communicate effectively in ways that are meaningful and accessible to each individual.
• Apply low arousal techniques and positive behavioral support approaches in daily practice.
• Support individuals in managing finances and personal responsibilities, adhering to organisational policies.
• Collaborate with colleagues, families, and external professionals to ensure consistent, high-standard support.
• Contribute actively to safety, quality enhancement, and continuous improvement within the service.
• Safeguard the wellbeing and safety of individuals in compliance with HIQA standards and organisational guidelines.
• Manage health needs, including medication administration according to policy.
• Maintain accurate documentation and participate in continuous learning and reflective practice.
• Uphold a culture centered on safeguarding, respect, and accountability, responding appropriately to any concerns.

Educational and Experience Requirements

• A completed QQI Level 5 Major Award in Healthcare (all 8 modules).
• Experience in intellectual disabilities or autism sectors is preferred.
• Familiarity with person-centred care and positive behavioural support methods is advantageous.

Knowledge and Skills

• Understanding of the key worker role and supporting philosophies for individuals with intellectual disabilities.
• Knowledge of relevant legislation including the Health Act 2007, HIQA regulations, and National Standards.
• Commitment to human rights-based, person-centred care approaches.
• Strong interpersonal communication and teamwork abilities.
• Capability to utilize initiative, solve problems, and work independently.
• Strong organisational and basic IT competence.
• Dedication to continuous professional development.

Additional Requirements

• Possession of a valid, clean Irish driving license.
