Job description

Role Overview

This position involves overseeing on-site supervision, cleaning, and related duties at a school, reporting directly to the School Principal. You will be responsible for managing the Assistant Building Supervisor and cleaning personnel where applicable, ensuring the premises are secure, well-maintained, and operate efficiently according to Education Authority guidelines.

Key Responsibilities

  • Ensure security of premises and contents including opening/closing, key custody, security systems operation, and responding promptly to unsociable hour call-outs such as break-ins or vandalism.
  • Manage mechanical and electrical services like boiler/heating systems, lighting, heating, and water systems, ensuring efficiency and reporting defects.
  • Plan, organize, and implement cleaning operations personally and through staff supervision, maintaining high standards and addressing any cleaning issues during the day.
  • Oversee porterage tasks such as handling deliveries, distributing materials, and preparing rooms for various activities or examinations.
  • Perform administrative duties including reporting on premises condition, managing contractors, maintaining stock and equipment records, and ensuring staff attendance records are accurate.
  • Carry out handyperson tasks within the scope of competency, ensuring compliance with health and safety legislation and internal regulations.

Essential Criteria

  • At least six months’ experience as an assistant or full building supervisor, caretaker, or cleaner in a school context.
  • Proven supervisory experience managing staff.
  • Ability to act as a key holder responding to urgent call-outs unpredictably, including outside normal working hours.
  • Knowledge of the role’s requirements, health and safety regulations relevant to the position, manual handling protocols, and security systems usage.
  • Strong people management skills, excellent communication, effective planning, administrative capabilities, and decision-making aptitude.
  • Alignment with the school’s values and ethos.

Desirable Criteria

  • Possession of a NEBOSH Health and Safety at Work qualification or comparable qualification.
  • Experience operating industrial cleaning equipment.
  • Familiarity with key holding responsibilities such as opening/closing premises and managing alarm systems.
