Job description
Position Summary and Purpose
The Banner Database Administrator (DBA) is tasked with overseeing the Ellucian Banner Student Information System along with its underlying database environments to ensure their smooth operation, security, and availability.
Key Responsibilities
- Administer, maintain, and manage the installation, configuration, upgrades, patching, and routine maintenance of the Ellucian Banner system and its associated databases.
- Oversee Oracle and Microsoft SQL Server databases and provide support for other database platforms as needed.
- Monitor database performance to optimize speed and efficiency via indexing, query improvement, and resource management.
- Create, review, and fine-tune SQL queries, scripts, stored procedures, and database objects.
- Handle database backup, restoration, recovery, and disaster recovery processes to ensure data integrity and availability.
- Maintain security protocols involving user roles, permissions, and encryption methods within databases.
- Support Banner access controls, including Ethos Identity Services and ORDS APIs, facilitating integration with other institutional systems.
- Manage database replication, clustering, and high-availability configurations, including failover mechanisms.
- Assist with database modeling, schema architecture, and enforcing data integrity rules.
- Develop automation scripts using languages such as Python and PowerShell to improve operational efficiency.
- Support cloud-hosted databases on platforms like AWS, Azure, and Oracle Cloud.
- Investigate and troubleshoot issues related to Banner, database integrity, integration, and system performance.
- Maintain thorough documentation of technical settings, configurations, procedures, and operational logs.
- Ensure adherence to institutional policies pertaining to information security, data governance, and change management.
- Collaborate extensively with application teams, infrastructure, security, and business units to aid project execution and system enhancement.
Required Qualifications
- Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Information Technology, Information Systems, Database Administration, or a closely related field.
- Preferred certifications include those in Oracle, SQL Server, cloud platforms, or Ellucian Banner administration.
Technical Skills and Competencies
- Expertise in Oracle and Microsoft SQL Server database administration.
- Familiar with other database technologies including MySQL, PostgreSQL, and MongoDB.
- Advanced skills in SQL and query performance tuning.
- Experience with database backup, recovery, and disaster recovery strategy implementation.
- Knowledge in database capacity planning and performance optimization.
- Hands-on experience managing database security, user roles, permissions, and encryption technologies.
- Understanding of data modeling and implementation of normalized relational database designs.
- Proficiency in scripting languages such as Python and PowerShell for automation tasks.
- Experience with replication, clustering, and establishing high-availability database solutions.
- Knowledge of cloud database environments including AWS, Azure, and Oracle Cloud.
- Experience administering Ellucian Banner Version 9.
- Working knowledge of ORDS APIs, Ethos Identity Services, and enterprise system integrations.
