Job description

About the Role

We are seeking a skilled Backend Software Engineer to contribute to the core messaging platform of a fast-growing technology company that supports millions of real-time interactions globally. In this role, you will develop and enhance highly scalable distributed systems including low latency messaging, Pub/Sub services, state synchronization, and next-generation AI communication infrastructure. You will work autonomously with ownership of architecture, code quality, and technical decisions, leveraging modern AI tools to boost development efficiency in an AI-first engineering environment.

Responsibilities

  • Design and develop scalable backend platform features for real-time messaging infrastructure.
  • Improve system performance, reliability, and scalability of distributed systems.
  • Build and maintain core components like messaging, event-driven architectures, and streaming technologies.
  • Tackle complex engineering challenges and deliver production-grade software.
  • Collaborate with the team in a mostly remote setup, attending occasional meetups in the dog-friendly North London office.

Candidate Profile

  • Demonstrated backend development experience using Go, Node.js, or comparable modern server-side languages.
  • Experience in designing, building, or operating distributed systems, messaging platforms, event-driven or streaming architectures.
  • Strong understanding of concurrency, scalability, fault-tolerance, and performance optimization.
  • Ability to work independently in a fast-paced and evolving engineering environment.
  • Familiarity with Pub/Sub platforms such as Kafka, RabbitMQ, or NATS is a strong advantage.
  • Comfortable integrating AI development tools while maintaining high engineering standards.

Benefits

  • Competitive salary up to £120,000 per year.
  • Equity participation via EMI share options.
  • 28 days of annual leave plus enhanced maternity and parental leave.
  • Provision of preferred equipment and home office setup.
  • Dedicated personal learning budget (£1000 annually) and 5% time to pursue personal projects.
  • Comprehensive health coverage including BUPA insurance, dental, mental health, and wellness support.
  • Pension scheme, life assurance, and income protection plans.
  • Fully paid one-month sabbatical after five years of service.
  • Additional perks such as gym subsidies and cycle-to-work scheme.
