Azure API Management (APIM) Developer

About the Role

We are seeking an Azure API Management Developer tasked with designing, building, securing, and managing API platforms for extensive government and enterprise solutions. This role will be responsible for the API gateway layer enabling communication among internal services, government bodies, and external users. The responsibilities span policy formulation, security enforcement, automation of API lifecycles, and onboarding developers.

Key Responsibilities

• Create and manage APIs within Azure API Management including crafting APIs, defining products, subscriptions, versions, and revisions.
• Develop and customize APIM policies using XML and C# expressions for functions such as authentication and authorization, rate limiting, quotas, caching, request and response transformations, routing, retries, and error handling.
• Secure APIs utilizing Microsoft Entra ID, OAuth 2.0/OpenID Connect, JWT validation, client certificates (mutual TLS), and managed identities.
• Integrate APIM with backend components like Azure Functions, App Service, Azure Kubernetes Service, Logic Apps, Service Bus, and on-premises systems via Virtual Network integration and self-hosted gateways.
• Define API contracts adhering to OpenAPI/Swagger specifications and enforce design standards including naming conventions, versioning, error models, and pagination.
• Implement deployment automation of APIs employing APIOps practices, leveraging tools such as Bicep, ARM templates, Terraform, alongside Azure DevOps or GitHub Actions pipelines.
• Customize and manage the APIM Developer Portal to facilitate smooth onboarding for both internal and external API consumers.
• Monitor API health, performance, and usage metrics using Application Insights, Azure Monitor, and Log Analytics; perform issue troubleshooting in production environments.
• Diagram and enforce secure network architectures positioning APIM alongside Application Gateway/WAF, Azure Front Door, private endpoints, and Azure Key Vault.
• Collaborate closely with architects, backend developers, security and infrastructure teams to fulfill goals covering performance, availability, and compliance.
• Produce comprehensive technical documentation, integration guides, and operational runbooks.

Qualifications

• A Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Software Engineering, or a related discipline is mandatory.
• Minimum of four years experience in software or integration development; at least two years specifically with Azure API Management.
• Advanced expertise in APIM policies and policy expression crafting.
• Strong understanding of RESTful principles, HTTP protocol, and API security techniques including OAuth 2.0, OpenID Connect, JWT, and mutual TLS.
• Proficiency in at least one backend development language such as C#/.NET, Java, or Node.js.
• Practical experience with Infrastructure as Code tools like Bicep, ARM templates, or Terraform, and managing CI/CD pipelines.
• Knowledgeable about Azure networking including VNets, private endpoints, network security groups, and DNS configurations.
• Hands-on with Microsoft Entra ID app registrations and managing API permissions.

Preferred Expertise

• Possession of Microsoft certifications such as AZ-204 (Azure Developer), AZ-305 (Solutions Architect), or AZ-500 (Security) is advantageous.
• Experience working with APIM self-hosted gateways, multi-region deployments, or the Premium/v2 service tiers.
• Familiar with event-driven integration patterns involving Event Grid, Service Bus, as well as GraphQL or SOAP-to-REST implementations in APIM.
• Prior experience delivering solutions in government or regulated sectors, with awareness of Qatar National Information Assurance (NIA) standards.
• Arabic language proficiency is a plus.
