About the Role
We are seeking an experienced Assistant Estimator to join a well-established commercial general contractor's preconstruction team in Boston, MA. This role offers the chance to take full ownership of project estimates within a dynamic environment featuring a strong pipeline of commercial construction projects. The successful candidate will collaborate directly with subcontractors, vendors, and internal teams to deliver competitive and accurate bids throughout the full lifecycle of GC-led bidding processes.
Key Responsibilities
- Assist in creating precise cost estimates that support bidding and budgeting activities.
- Work collaboratively with project managers, engineers, and architects to grasp project specifications and timelines.
- Analyze detailed project designs and specifications to assess total project costs.
- Use expertise in Material Take Off (MTO) to accurately quantify required materials per project.
- Regularly conduct cost analysis and value engineering initiatives to identify cost efficiencies.
- Engage in negotiations with contractors and suppliers to ensure favorable pricing and terms.
- Monitor industry pricing trends to maintain competitive procurement strategies.
- Prepare detailed reports and estimates for various stakeholders, including clients and senior leadership.
- Maintain an updated, comprehensive database with project costs and relevant market data.
- Ensure all estimating activities comply with company standards and procedures.
Qualifications and Requirements
- Minimum 5 years' experience in construction estimating or a related role within a commercial general contracting environment; subcontractor-only experience is not suitable.
- Proven capabilities in project bidding, budgeting, value engineering, MTO, negotiation, and cost analysis.
- Strong mathematical skills coupled with proficiency in information technology and industry-standard software, including the MS Office Suite.
- Excellent communication, negotiation, and problem-solving abilities.
- In-depth understanding of construction processes, materials, and regulatory requirements.
- Ability to perform well under pressure and adhere to deadlines.
- Bachelor's degree in Construction Management, Engineering, or related field preferred.
- Professional certifications in construction estimating or related fields are advantageous.
