Assistant Aquarist - Part-Time

Role Overview

Join SEA LIFE Kelly Tarlton’s Aquarium as a part-time Assistant Aquarist and contribute to the care and management of diverse marine and freshwater species. This role offers a unique chance to work in one of Auckland’s most popular attractions, supporting animal welfare and enhancing visitor education and conservation efforts.

Key Responsibilities

Assist the Curatorial department with daily aquarium operations, focusing on maintaining habitats for saltwater and freshwater fish. Engage in hands-on care for an array of species including fish, crustaceans, Tuatara, Penguins, and marine turtles undergoing rehabilitation. Help ensure the facilities and displays remain clean and presentable for an optimal guest experience.

Candidate Profile

Essential qualifications and abilities:

• Meticulous attention to cleanliness and detail in display maintenance
• Strong observation, record-keeping, organizational, and communication skills
• Flexibility and adaptability to handle changing and unfamiliar work environments
• Authorized to work in New Zealand
• Physical capability for tasks including bending, stooping, squatting, crawling, crouching, kneeling, balancing, climbing up to 4 meters, and lifting or carrying items up to 30kg

Preferred qualifications:

• SCUBA certifications such as Rescue Diver, Dive Master, Instructor, or commercial diving credentials
• Ability to obtain and maintain occupational dive medical clearance
• Prior hands-on experience within aquarium operations or marine animal husbandry
• First Aid and/or Oxygen Resuscitation training
• Computer proficiency especially in MS Office and Excel
