Application Engineer

Position Overview

We are looking for an Application Engineer to join our global infrastructure and platform engineering team. This role focuses on creating software-driven automation solutions for Kubernetes-managed services and SaaS platforms at InterSystems.

Key Responsibilities

• Design and maintain Kubernetes-native software using Go, including controllers, Custom Resource Definitions (CRDs), reconciliation logic, and various automation components.
• Develop automation for tasks such as provisioning, configuration, upgrades, scaling, recovery, and other managed service workflows.
• Produce maintainable Go code alongside unit, integration, and cluster-based test suites.
• Support continuous integration and deployment pipelines for building, testing, packaging, and releasing Kubernetes platform software.
• Integrate with Kubernetes features including networking, storage, ingress, certificates, scheduling, security, and cluster lifecycle management.
• Contribute automation using tools such as Helm, Terraform, GitOps, Argo CD, and Flux.
• Implement security best practices encompassing secure defaults, least-privilege RBAC, secrets management, workload isolation, and operational controls.
• Create observable and maintainable software through logging, metrics, events, health checks, and status conditions.
• Debug Kubernetes workloads, controller operations, failed reconciliations, deployments, and automation malfunctions.
• Work closely with engineering, SRE, security, and application teams to document procedures, write runbooks, and share knowledge.

Required Experience and Qualifications

• Minimum of three years' experience in software engineering, platform engineering, DevOps, infrastructure automation, cloud engineering, or Site Reliability Engineering (SRE).
• Proficiency in Go programming or strong software engineering skills with capacity to adapt to Go.
• Hands-on experience with Kubernetes, container technologies, Linux, and cloud-native deployment paradigms.
• Understanding of Kubernetes APIs, CRDs, controllers, reconciliation loops, RBAC, events, status conditions, and resource lifecycle management.
• Experience using Git, CI/CD systems, automated testing, and participating in code reviews.
• Familiarity with Helm, Terraform, GitOps workflows, Argo CD, Flux, or similar tools for infrastructure as code and automation.
• Knowledge of Kubernetes security concepts including RBAC, secrets handling, namespaces, network policies, admission controllers, and workload isolation.
• Strong problem-solving abilities combined with effective communication and teamwork skills.

Preferred Qualifications

• Experience with Kubernetes development frameworks such as Kubebuilder, Operator SDK, controller-runtime, or client-go.
• Background in developing Kubernetes Operators, admission webhooks, or platform automation controllers.
• Experience working with managed Kubernetes platforms like EKS, AKS, GKE, Rancher, or Spectro Cloud.
• Familiarity with observability and service mesh tools such as Prometheus, Grafana, Loki, Fluent Bit, ELK/EFK stacks, Istio, Linkerd, Cilium, Velero, Kasten, or Stash.
• Active contributions to open-source projects related to Kubernetes, Go, cloud-native technologies, or platform engineering.
• Relevant certifications including CKAD, CKA, CKS, Terraform Associate, or Linux Foundation Certified System Administrator (LFCS).
