Role Summary

We seek talented Android Developers to join multidisciplinary digital delivery teams building impactful public-facing digital services used by millions across the UK. The role involves crafting robust, accessible, and user-centred Android applications, engaging in technical decision-making, and maintaining software quality standards while contributing to modern government digital services.

Key Responsibilities

  • Design, implement, and maintain high-quality Android apps primarily using Kotlin.
  • Translate user and business demands into reliable and maintainable technical solutions.
  • Write clean, maintainable, and well-tested code adhering to contemporary Android development standards.
  • Collaborate effectively with designers, product managers, QA specialists, and developers in agile teams.
  • Engage in architectural discussions, code reviews, and decision-making processes.
  • Develop automated testing procedures and support continuous integration/delivery pipelines.
  • Investigate and resolve bugs and performance bottlenecks.
  • Incorporate security, accessibility, privacy, resilience, and performance considerations throughout development.
  • Create technical documentation and share knowledge within the team.
  • Establish and uphold development guidelines, design patterns, and best practices.
  • Stay current with Android and broader mobile technology advancements.
  • Foster an inclusive and collaborative engineering culture, mentoring colleagues as appropriate.

Essential Qualifications and Skills

  • Proven professional experience developing Android applications commercially.
  • Advanced proficiency in Kotlin programming.
  • Strong grasp of the Android SDK and associated development ecosystems.
  • Experience with modern Android architectures and development methodologies.
  • Skilled in integrating mobile applications with backend APIs and services.
  • Proficient in automated testing strategies including unit and UI tests.
  • Familiarity with Git version control and modern software development workflows.
  • Good understanding of software engineering principles: clean code, modularity, maintainability, and version control.
  • Ability to debug and optimize application performance and troubleshoot defects.

Desired Additional Skills

  • Experience in Java and maintaining legacy or modern Java codebases.
  • Knowledge of Jetpack Compose and traditional Android View frameworks.
  • Familiarity with Android Jetpack libraries and architecture components.
  • Experience with asynchronous programming using Kotlin Coroutines.
  • Understanding of Android application architecture and design patterns.
  • Exposure to CI/CD pipelines and automated build and deployment mechanisms.
  • Work with cloud-hosted services and RESTful APIs.
  • Knowledge of mobile security best practices and data protection.
  • Experience in developing apps adhering to recognized accessibility standards.
  • Competence with analytics, monitoring, and performance measurement tools.
