Role Overview
The Airport Baggage Sorter plays a critical role in managing the efficient flow of passenger luggage through airport operations. This job involves meticulous sorting, handling, loading, and unloading of baggage while ensuring compliance with safety, security, and airline protocols in a dynamic and fast-moving environment.
Key Responsibilities
- Carefully sort, transfer, load, unload, and move passenger baggage according to established flight schedules and baggage handling guidelines.
- Accurately read and confirm baggage tags, flight details, destinations, and other crucial information.
- Route luggage properly to the designated flights, baggage makeup zones, transfer stations, or arrivals section.
- Handle loading and unloading tasks involving aircraft, baggage carts, conveyor belts, containers, and various ground-support tools.
- Operate baggage conveyor systems and approved equipment such as dollies and carts safely and effectively.
- Adhere to all airport, airline, and organizational procedures during baggage handling operations.
- Inspect luggage for visible damages, misrouting, or unusual conditions, and report any findings promptly.
- Manage passenger baggage with care to minimize damage, loss, or delays.
- Ensure timely delivery of connecting or transferred luggage to correct locations within operational timeframes.
- Provide assistance with oversized, priority, special, or transfer baggage as necessary.
- Maintain precise documentation of baggage movements, irregularities, damages, and other relevant operational records.
- Monitor baggage workflows and promptly communicate any delays, discrepancies, or operational challenges to supervisors and related personnel.
- Work collaboratively with baggage handlers, airline teams, ramp agents, ground operations, security, and other departments.
- Strictly observe airport security protocols during baggage handling and while accessing restricted areas.
- Ensure compliance with all safety standards, airport security rules, airline procedures, and company policies during all activities.
- Regularly inspect baggage handling equipment; report faults, damages, or unsafe conditions immediately.
- Stay alert to hazards including moving vehicles, aircraft, machinery, and conveyor systems within the workplace.
- Use correct techniques for lifting, carrying, pushing, and loading to mitigate injury risks.
- Keep baggage handling zones and work areas clean, organized, and safe.
- Report any lost, damaged, misrouted baggage, incidents, near misses, or safety concerns without delay.
- Be prepared to support operations during peak periods, flight disruptions, or irregular scenarios requiring extra baggage handling.
- Work flexible hours covering early mornings, evenings, weekends, public holidays, and overtime as needed to meet operational demands.
- Maintain punctuality and follow all airport identification, access, uniform, and security standards.
- Perform any additional baggage handling or airport ground support tasks assigned by management.
