Job description
Role Overview
Maincode is advancing Australia's pioneering AI language model, Matilda, scaling and deploying it as a production-ready system accessible to the public. The company develops AI infrastructure from first principles, managing the entire lifecycle from architecture design to deployment. This position focuses on creating the product-facing front end systems that deliver Matilda's capabilities to users reliably and efficiently.
Key Responsibilities
- Develop and maintain the primary web interface for Matilda, enabling chat sessions, history tracking, and adjustable settings.
- Create high-performance, reliable streaming user experiences for displaying AI model outputs, including handling real-time tokens, partial updates, cancellations, and retries.
- Design and implement user interface flows that encourage safe and responsible AI use, incorporating features like reporting, content refusal, user feedback, and content moderation.
- Collaborate closely with backend and infrastructure engineers to integrate APIs, authentication mechanisms, rate limiting, and monitoring tools.
- Enhance application performance by optimizing latency, minimizing bundle size, improving rendering speed, and boosting perceived responsiveness.
- Build internal dashboards and operational tools that support team workflows, including monitoring usage, quality signals, and managing user feedback.
- Debug cross-browser, device, network, and live production issues to ensure consistent user experiences.
- Drive quality improvements through rigorous testing, monitoring, and staged deployments.
Candidate Profile
This role suits engineers early in their careers (typically one to two years of production software development experience) who are passionate about user experience, product quality, and reliability in real-world settings. Intellectual curiosity, strong debugging skills, and a willingness to learn are paramount. Prior AI development experience is not required.
- Demonstrated care for frontend performance and stability, especially in production environments.
- Preference for building maintainable frontend architectures over one-off interfaces.
- Strong problem-solving instincts and calmness under pressure when resolving issues.
- Ability to evaluate product trade-offs with an understanding of system reliability and failure modes.
- Active use of user metrics and feedback to guide development beyond surface-level visuals.
- Desire to engage closely with the core AI system, not just peripheral marketing websites.
Technical Environment & Collaboration
Expect to work extensively in TypeScript and modern front end tooling to construct production-level web applications featuring component-based architecture, state management, and full API integration. Experience or comfort building real-time or streaming features using mechanisms such as Server-Sent Events (SSE) or WebSockets is essential. You will collaborate closely with user experience researchers, backend developers, infrastructure specialists, and research teams, balancing the evolving AI model with stable user experiences.
About Maincode
Maincode builds the complete AI stack in-house — from data preparation to model training, infrastructure management, and operational deployment. The team values engineers who strive to understand system internals fully and treats product reliability as an integral component of AI intelligence. This opportunity places you near the core of Australia's AI development efforts, helping deliver a groundbreaking language model to users.
Additional Information
This is a full-time position located in Melbourne, Victoria. Applicants must have unrestricted lawful work rights in Australia, as visa sponsorship is not available at this time.
