Job description

Overview

Join Deciphex as an AI Data Scientist specializing in Research Pathology, contributing to the advancement of AI technology in toxicologic pathology and translational research. This role operates at the convergence of histopathology, computational pathology, and machine learning, transforming complex scientific queries into well-structured datasets, comprehensive experiments, benchmarking systems, and validated analytical evidence.

Collaborate closely with pathologists, AI researchers, software engineers, and product teams to ensure AI model development aligns with actual tissue morphology, diagnostic processes, and unmet research demands. You will assist translational research efforts such as biomarker identification, immunohistochemistry (IHC) quantification, and characterization of tissue-based endpoints, facilitating the transition of exploratory research into standardized methods, scientific publications, and enhanced product functionalities.

A leadership role awaits in pathology foundation-model research, involving the design of training experiments, creation of relevant benchmarks, and the translation of experimental studies into dependable methods applicable to pathology.

Location and Eligibility

This position is based in Ireland with work-from-home flexibility. Applicants must have eligibility to work in Ireland as the company cannot provide Irish work permits or visa sponsorships.

Key Responsibilities

  • Manage, describe, and analyze extensive preclinical and translational pathology data, including whole-slide images, structured study data, annotations, and metadata.
  • Oversee advanced data-science and machine-learning research initiatives in toxicologic pathology and translational applications.
  • Design training experiments for pathology foundation models, including data curation, training-recipe evaluations, fine-tuning, and analysis of learned representations for pathology uses.
  • Validate pathology AI models by performance assessment, investigation of confounders, and preparation of evidence packages suitable for regulatory evaluation.
  • Construct benchmarking datasets and evaluation tasks reflecting practical pathology scenarios, especially where no public standards exist.
  • Create and standardize data-processing and validation pipelines supporting model development and deployment.
  • Support biomarker discovery, IHC quantification, and tissue endpoint characterization in translational research projects.
  • Work directly with pathologists to ground datasets and model outcomes in actual morphological features, lesion descriptions, and diagnostic judgments.
  • Coordinate with AI, software, and product teams to align research outputs with Deciphex's scientific goals and product roadmap.

Required Qualifications and Experience

  • PhD in data science, bioinformatics, computational biology, biomedical science, statistics, computer science, or a related quantitative discipline; equivalent research experience considered.
  • Advanced skills in Python programming and familiarity with machine-learning and scientific computing tools such as PyTorch and scikit-learn.
  • Proven experience managing large imaging datasets, including integration and quality control of structured metadata.
  • Practical application of data science and machine learning within digital pathology, biomedical imaging, or other complex biomedical datasets.
  • Robust understanding of applied statistics, model validation, experimental design, and meaningful performance metrics.
  • Experience in conducting deep-learning experiments encompassing model training, evaluation, ablation studies, and comparative modelling.
  • Capability to translate scientific inquiries into precise datasets, analytical methods, validation approaches, and evidence-backed results.
  • Competence in creating reproducible analytical workflows using sound practices for version control, testing, environment/configuration management, provenance tracking, and technical documentation.
  • Skill in interpreting scientific literature, technical standards, and pertinent regulatory guidelines critically.
  • Excellent English communication skills, both written and verbal, to produce clear documentation for diverse audiences.
  • Demonstrated success working collaboratively in multidisciplinary and multi-organizational teams while balancing scientific and delivery priorities.

Desirable Skills and Experience

  • Knowledge of histopathology, including tissue morphology, pathological terminology, and interaction with pathologists on datasets and model results.
  • Familiarity with preclinical toxicology study design, including treatment/control groups, endpoints, and workflows.
  • Experience with whole-slide imaging, digital pathology platforms, image formats, annotation workflows, and management of large-scale image data.
  • Expertise in pathology foundation models, self-supervised learning, Vision Transformers, representation learning, model fine-tuning, or knowledge distillation.
  • Experience deploying and evaluating deep-learning models on GPU, high-performance computing, cloud, or distributed systems.
  • Previous engagement with translational pathology tasks like biomarker discovery, IHC/multiplex image analysis, tissue segmentation, and endpoint characterization.
  • Collaboration with software engineers to transform research models and workflows into maintainable, tested, product-ready solutions.
  • A track record of peer-reviewed publications, conference presentations, or completed applied AI research projects.
