Job description
Role Overview
The Accommodation Services Officer (ASO) supports and supervises offenders under Supervision Orders pursuant to the Dangerous Prisoners (Sexual Offenders) Act 2003. Working on a 24/7 shift roster, ASOs ensure offenders comply with order conditions and accommodation requirements while fostering development of independent living skills to enable successful reintegration into society. The role involves engaging with offenders, monitoring security protocols within the precinct, managing offender movement, and intervening to minimize risk incidents, all aimed at preserving community safety alongside offender rehabilitation.
Core Duties and Responsibilities
- Provide oversight and assistance to offenders subject to supervision orders.
- Monitor offender compliance with legal conditions and accommodation arrangements continuously.
- Engage with offenders to encourage development of independent and reintegration skills.
- Control and supervise access and movement within the precinct for security purposes.
- Respond proactively to reduce risks and incidents on site.
Required Skills and Competencies
- Strong verbal communication tailored effectively to varying audiences, including individuals displaying challenging behaviors.
- Accurate and timely preparation of clear written reports and documentation.
- Effective stakeholder engagement fostering cooperation with various external service providers.
- Professional interpersonal skills to respectfully build rapport and understand individual offender needs, facilitating suitable guidance.
- Operational problem solving guided by protocols, with sound risk assessment and escalation when needed.
- Confident conflict management using established procedures to de-escalate situations responsibly.
- Familiarity with relevant legislation, policies, and governance frameworks applicable to the role.
- Proficiency with departmental IT systems including word processing, email, and specialized software.
- Demonstrated resilience, persistence in achieving objectives, and adeptness at handling setbacks.
- Cultural sensitivity and empathy, showing respect and understanding of diverse backgrounds.
Additional Role Conditions and Qualifications
- Experience working in criminal justice, human services, or regulatory environments is highly preferred.
- Successful completion of internal pre-service training, accreditation, and ongoing professional development mandatory.
- Holder of a valid C Class driver's license is required.
- Flexibility to work outside standard hours, travel, and temporarily operate from different locations as needed.
- First aid certification required at commencement.
- Shift work involving 24/7 offender monitoring with applicable shift penalties.
