Academic Advisor, NU-Q

About the Role

The Academic Advisor at Northwestern University in Qatar (NU-Q) will play a critical role in advising and supporting undergraduate students enrolled in journalism and communication programs. Reporting to the Director of Academic Advising and Student Success, this position demands a motivated individual who can guide students through academic policies and program requirements.

Key Responsibilities

• Deliver clear and informed guidance to undergraduates about degree requirements, academic programs, and policies, including informing students about academic support resources.
• Effectively communicate university policies, procedures, and important deadlines to students.
• Lead orientation sessions and meetings to acclimate new students.
• Assist in developing and implementing processes that enhance the advising experience.
• Track student progress towards meeting graduation criteria.
• Maintain precise advising records and utilize advising management technology platforms efficiently.
• Participate in student events such as new student orientation sessions, course fairs, and academic advising sessions.
• Advise on course registration, major and minor declaration, as well as status changes including transfer or study abroad options.
• Collaborate with academic program directors to address student registration requirements.
• Work closely with the Student Affairs division to monitor academic progress, provide academic support, and assist with career planning.
• Organize workshops focused on student success and development.
• Process accommodation requests in a timely manner.
• Perform other relevant duties as required.
• Availability for occasional weekend and evening work is expected.

Minimum Qualifications and Competencies

• Bachelor's degree in media, journalism, communication, or a related area from an accredited U.S. or American-style institution.
• 1 to 3 years of experience in academic advising within an American or American-style higher education environment.
• Proven ability to work collaboratively and successfully with students, faculty, and administration.
• Ability to manage tasks efficiently under strict deadlines in a dynamic setting.
• Experience engaging with college students in student-focused environments.

Preferred Qualifications and Competencies

• Advanced degree in media, journalism, communication, or related discipline from an accredited U.S. or American-style university.
• Between 3 to 5 years of experience in academic advising or student support roles within American or American-style institutions.
• Familiarity with PeopleSoft or STELLIC platforms.
• Experience working in the Arab region or in the global south.
• Proficiency in Arabic language is advantageous.

Compensation

The expected salary range for this role is between 56,780 to 73,200 USD annually. The final offer will consider the candidate’s education, experience, expertise, skills, and internal salary equity as well as market trends.
