About The Teams and Education SuperGroup

The Teams and Education (T&E) SuperGroup at Canva drives the success of several SaaS products such as Canva Pro, Canva for Enterprise, Canva for NFPs, and Canva for Education. These products have millions of users worldwide and are a key revenue source for the company. The SuperGroup consists of 4 groups, 15 teams, and nearly 200 diverse team members, collectively working to enhance user experience and support Canva's growth objectives.

Key Role Focus

  • Lead delivery of sharing and permissions capabilities across Canva's product suite, including the core design platform, content management, and branding components.
  • Develop innovative solutions to ensure the product’s decision platforms are scalable and aligned with business goals.
  • Collaborate extensively by authoring design documents and facilitating design discussions.
  • Promote best practices that improve service performance, resilience, and adaptability.
  • Architect and implement complex system components demonstrating advanced technical expertise.
  • Oversee major project implementations, break down tasks effectively, and maintain team alignment using clear communication, including diagrams.
  • Mentor fellow engineers, supporting their career development and helping resolve technical obstacles.
  • Drive impactful organization-wide initiatives to improve standards in reliability, development speed, and security.

Desired Qualifications and Skills

  • Extensive experience building distributed web applications with strong proficiency in Java programming.
  • Proven ability to plan and execute complex architectural changes, focusing on innovative problem-solving beyond reliance on specific frameworks or libraries.
  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills, both written and verbal, capable of fostering collaboration among stakeholders and technical teams.
  • Experience mentoring engineering teams, adept at resolving technical challenges and setting a positive example.
  • Solid foundation in computer science fundamentals including concurrency, data structures, distributed systems, and resiliency techniques like load balancing, throttling, back pressure, and circuit breaking.
  • Practical experience operating in large distributed cloud environments, with a preference for AWS, and knowledge of cloud-native technologies such as Kubernetes and Terraform.
  • Bonus: Experience with large-scale distributed asset management systems.
