About the Role
PathGen is seeking a Staff / Lead Full-Stack Engineer to contribute to the development of a cutting-edge platform leveraging AI and data engineering focused on pathogen genomics and public health. This position is a hands-on leadership role that spans frontend, backend, and platform architecture. You will guide a focused engineering team in making sound technical decisions and delivering robust, reliable solutions.
Key Responsibilities
- Lead the design and execution of major product components from start to finish.
- Translate complex, ambiguous product and scientific needs into clear and pragmatic technical strategies.
- Develop across the full stack, encompassing user interfaces, APIs, data pipelines, and backend services.
- Make informed architectural decisions, clearly communicating the associated trade-offs.
- Provide leadership to engineers throughout intricate projects by removing obstacles and clarifying priorities and implementation steps.
- Elevate engineering quality through comprehensive design reviews, code inspections, testing, and best practices.
- Collaborate closely with product managers, designers, data scientists, and scientific stakeholders.
- Proactively identify potential technical risks, performance bottlenecks, and technical debt before they impact delivery.
- Maintain direct, hands-on involvement in coding and contribution to the codebase.
Candidate Profile
- Proven expertise in developing and delivering production-grade web applications.
- Robust full-stack skills, with strong mastery in either frontend or backend, coupled with the ability to work efficiently across both domains.
- Experience designing APIs, back-end services, and data-centric or asynchronous system architectures.
- Track record of independently managing complex technical projects from conceptualization to production deployment.
- Solid foundation in software architecture and system design principles.
- Ability to evaluate scalability, reliability, security, performance, and maintainability considerations thoughtfully.
- Comfort working in environments where requirements may be incomplete or evolve over time.
- Experience mentoring or providing technical leadership to engineering teams.
- Effective communication skills suited to both technical and non-technical audiences.
Desirable Skills (Not Mandatory)
- Proficiency in Python and contemporary TypeScript for web development.
- Experience with cloud infrastructure and distributed system design.
- Background in data-intensive or scientific application development.
- Exposure to AI/ML-driven products.
- Knowledge or interest in genomics, bioinformatics, or public health domains.
- Familiarity with geospatial tools or products.
What We Provide
- Competitive salary package.
- Hybrid working model with two days per week in the Singapore General Hospital office.
- Opportunity to make a tangible impact in public health through your work.
- Significant ownership and influence concerning architecture, engineering standards, and strategic technical direction.
- A small, skilled team that operates with minimal bureaucracy and high autonomy.
- Engaging challenges at the convergence of software engineering, AI, data science, genomics, and geospatial systems.
- A position that blends hands-on coding with meaningful technical leadership responsibilities.
Additional Note
Domain-specific experience in biology or genomics is not required. The organization prioritizes strong engineering judgment, technical leadership, and the ability to quickly assimilate knowledge from unfamiliar fields.
