About the Role
Join us to shape the future of entertainment by leading cutting-edge streaming technology at Prime Video. As a Software Development Manager, you will lead engineers who build the critical, high-scale backend services powering the "Play" button on Prime Video, responsible for delivering seamless streaming experiences for millions across the globe. Prime Video offers vast content including original shows, licensed titles, and major live sports events such as NFL, French Open, and Premier League in over 200 countries.
Key Responsibilities
- Recruit, develop, and retain a high-performing engineering team, focusing on career growth and technical excellence.
- Establish rigorous design and operational review processes that encourage open discussion and collaborative decision-making.
- Own the end-to-end architecture, roadmap, delivery, and reliability of business-critical services with stringent goals for availability, latency, and efficiency.
- Lead 24/7 service operations including incident response and continuous improvements to reduce operational overhead.
- Collaborate cross-functionally with product, program management, engineering partners, and leadership to shape long-term strategy and meet quarterly goals.
- Drive high hiring standards by actively participating in interviews and mentoring team interviewers to help expand Prime Video India’s engineering organization.
A Typical Day
Your day might begin with assessing overnight incidents to identify root causes, followed by design discussions on new live-streaming features facilitated by your senior engineers. Afternoons may involve one-on-ones focusing on team growth, and synchronizing quarterly plans with Seattle counterparts. You will also produce reports on operational metrics and drive continual improvements.
About the Team
Prime Video Play Starts team manages the critical services behind every stream initiation, supporting global live sports and VOD playback with systems operating at massive scale. This team collaborates across Seattle and Bengaluru locations, owning core playback systems and expanding globally to support diverse content streaming needs.
Basic Qualifications
- Minimum 7 years of software engineering experience, including at least 3 years managing engineering teams.
- Extensive experience (8+ years) in leading design and development of multi-tier web services.
- Solid understanding of software development lifecycle practices encompassing coding standards, reviews, version control, builds, testing, certifications, and live site operations.
- Proven collaborator with product and program management teams.
- Experience with designing scalable, reliable system architectures and employing suitable design patterns.
Preferred Qualifications
- Strong communication skills for effectively interacting with users, technical teams, and senior leadership to gather requirements and convey product and technical strategies.
- Demonstrated ability to recruit, mentor, and manage software engineers to enhance their capabilities and team productivity.
