About the Role

The Storage Layer Services team is pioneering the redesign of MongoDB's Cloud Storage Layer. As a new but pivotal group, we develop high-performance, multi-tenant distributed storage services to enhance the existing architecture and serve a broader range of customer needs more efficiently. We are seeking accomplished Senior Engineers to be founding members, contributing to a multi-year strategic roadmap.
Our team values inclusivity, diversity, and collaboration. Work alongside peers applying distributed systems principles to build critical storage components of a widely-used database. This role is based in Sydney with a hybrid working arrangement.
Candidate Profile
- At least five years experience in programming, debugging, and optimizing distributed or highly concurrent software systems.
- Strong foundation in systems programming, including multi-threading and performance profiling.
- Experience with distributed system architectures.
- Proven expertise in creating, deploying, and managing multi-tenant cloud services emphasizing operational excellence.
- Knowledge of database internals or building foundational data processing components.
- Capability in developing performance-critical software.
- Experience with extensive backend and compiled codebases, ideally in Rust or C/C++.
- Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science or related field, or equivalent practical background.
- Excellent communication skills with a collaborative mindset.
- Strong time management and project complexity assessment abilities.
- Interest or background in high-availability system theory and practice; advanced degrees or hands-on experience advantageous.
Position Responsibilities
- Design and develop secure, multi-tenant cloud-native storage solutions that ensure high performance, automated failover, and zero downtime.
- Implement and maintain production-grade Rust applications, including on-call operational responsibilities.
- Investigate test failures and performance issues and apply corrections.
- Lead large-scale, multi-team development projects and manage related tasks.
- Design, develop, test, and support new Storage Layer Services features while promoting operational excellence.
- Partner with Product Management and Engineering leadership to guide product roadmap development.
Success Criteria
- Within the first month, comprehend the high-level MongoDB Cloud Storage Architecture and fix initial bugs.
- Within three months, contribute to Rust projects for initial Storage Layer Service releases, partake in code reviews, and evaluate new feature designs.
- Within six months, lead feature creation and mentor new team members.
