Proofreader - Educational Publishing

Overview

We seek a meticulous and linguistically skilled Proofreader to join our book publishing team based in Kolkata. The role focuses on reviewing educational materials such as textbooks, guidebooks, question banks, and test papers to ensure accuracy and quality before printing.

Primary Duties

• Carefully examine manuscripts and proofs at various stages to detect and correct errors in spelling, grammar, punctuation, typing, sentence construction, and formatting.
• Verify clarity, coherence, and consistency of language, ensuring the text is understandable and maintains consistent terminology and style throughout.
• Review content in at least two languages, typically English combined with Bengali or Hindi; proficiency in all three languages is advantageous.
• Apply academic judgement across various subjects such as English, Bengali, Hindi, Mathematics, Sciences, Social Studies, Economics, Commerce, and competitive exam content to identify factual or content inconsistencies.
• Check questions and multiple-choice items for correct numbering, sequencing, clarity, and alignment with answer keys.
• Assess mathematical and scientific notation for accuracy and flag overt errors; review related tables, charts, and diagrams for alignment and labeling correctness.
• Inspect overall book layout including pagination, headings, font style, spacing, alignment, and graphics placement, noting formatting errors for correction by the design team.
• Ensure consistency in spellings, names, abbreviations, and references by cross-verifying across chapters and proofs.
• Collaborate with desktop publishing operators by providing clear, precise correction instructions and rechecking revised pages to verify corrections and detect new errors.
• Perform multiple rounds of proofreading corresponding to manuscript to final print approval stages, carefully confirming all corrections and no new issues.
• Conduct a final quality assurance check before print approval by reviewing all textual and layout elements, ensuring completeness and minimizing potential mistakes.
• Apply editing skills to improve readability, rewrite sentences, suggest better word choices, and simplify language appropriate for the target audience, without altering original content meaning unless approved.
• Conduct basic research to verify names, dates, places, historical facts, terminology, and academic information, flagging uncertainties for further validation.
