About IOM

The International Organization for Migration (IOM), established in 1951, is a UN-related organization and the leading UN agency focused on migration. It works with government, intergovernmental, and non-governmental partners to support safe and orderly migration, protect people on the move, address displacement, and create pathways for regular migration while also advising governments and migrants.

IOM promotes a workplace that is respectful, inclusive, and supportive, with an emphasis on helping employees grow professionally and feel valued. The organization welcomes applications from people of diverse backgrounds and offers reasonable accommodation during recruitment when needed.

Applications from both internal and external candidates are invited. Where candidates are equally qualified and eligible, first-tier applicants are considered before second-tier applicants; for this vacancy, internal and internal-equivalent applicants are treated as first-tier.

Role overview

Working under the Resource Management Officer and reporting directly to the Admin & Finance Assistant, the Driver supports IOM operations by safely operating assigned vehicles, maintaining them in good condition, and providing transport and logistical support to office staff and official visitors.

Key duties

  • Operate assigned IOM office vehicle(s) in a safe and responsible manner.
  • Carry out routine daily checks to keep vehicles roadworthy, including inspection of tyres, brakes, engine oil, fan belt, and related items.
  • Arrange minor vehicle repairs and ensure the vehicles remain clean and well maintained.
  • Make sure vehicles are serviced at the required intervals.
  • Maintain spare-parts records and complete a monthly inventory of vehicle parts.
  • Select the safest and most direct route using the best available roads to reach destinations.
  • Use IOM vehicles only for approved official purposes, as directed by the supervisor.
  • Maintain daily log sheets and prepare monthly summaries covering mileage, fuel use, and similar vehicle statistics.
  • Handle all matters with a high level of confidentiality and discretion, especially when dealing with IOM staff and officials.
  • Take appropriate precautions to reduce security risks to personnel and property in and around the vehicle and along transport routes.
  • Receive official staff at airports and support immigration and customs procedures when required.
  • Pick up and deliver mail, documents, pouches, and other items between the country office and external locations such as post offices, airports, government offices, other UN agencies, institutions, and project sites.
  • Assist office staff with simple clerical tasks when needed, such as answering calls, making calls, photocopying, and maintaining records.
  • Carry out any other related duties assigned.

Qualifications and experience

Candidates should have either a high school certificate with at least 2 years of relevant work experience, or a bachelor’s degree from an accredited institution. A valid national driving licence is required. Accredited universities are those included in the UNESCO World Higher Education Database.

Relevant experience and knowledge should include traffic rules and regulations, operating different vehicle makes and models, carrying out minor repairs, and using tools such as radio, email, telephone, and similar applications.

Language requirements

Fluency in both English and Swahili is required. Knowledge of French and Spanish will be considered an added advantage.

Core competencies

IOM expects all staff to demonstrate inclusion and respect for diversity, integrity and transparency, professionalism, courage, and empathy. The role also requires strong teamwork, the ability to deliver results, willingness to learn and share knowledge, accountability, and clear communication. Where applicable, managerial competencies include leadership, empowering others, building trust, strategic thinking and vision, and humility.

Important notes

Any offer related to this vacancy depends on funding confirmation. The selection process may also be used to fill similar positions in other duty stations, and recommended candidates may remain eligible for appointment to similar roles for up to 24 months.

Appointment is subject to medical fitness, accreditation, and any required residency, visa, or security clearances. IOM maintains zero tolerance for sexual exploitation and abuse, sexual harassment, abuse of authority, and discrimination based on gender, nationality, age, race, sexual orientation, religion, ethnicity, or disability.

IOM does not charge any fee during recruitment and does not request bank account information. Only complete applications submitted through IOM’s e-recruitment system are accepted. Late applications will not be considered, and only shortlisted candidates will be contacted.
