Position Overview

The Fire Surveyor will provide essential technical support to fire engineering and surveying teams across the UK and Ireland. Key tasks include conducting on-site fire inspections — particularly during construction and operational phases — performing external wall inspections during builds and refurbishments, surveying fire stopping and compartmentation, carrying out fire door inspections, and occasionally executing fire risk assessments. Reporting will be made to the Lead Surveyor and Divisional Director.

Key Responsibilities

  • Perform inspections and technical evaluations of active and passive fire protection systems.
  • Assess compliance with Irish fire safety legislation and standards including TGDB, BS 9991, BS 9999, and applicable Irish and British standards.
  • Maintain and update technical knowledge of passive fire protection.
  • Conduct site visits throughout construction phases to identify issues related to Fire Safety Certificate approved designs per inspection plan.
  • Prepare timely technical reports highlighting on-site construction concerns.
  • Review contractor responses concerning raised issues and ensure satisfactory resolution.
  • Participate in inspections for licensed premises to support liquor licensing applications.
  • Carry out external façade assessments meeting industry standards.
  • Supervise third-party fire stopping and compartmentation installations.
  • Conduct visual inspections of fire doors.
  • Manage personal client portfolio and strive to surpass their expectations.
  • Deliver in-house Continuing Professional Development (CPD) presentations in your specialist area when required.
  • Stay informed on current industry guidance and product literature, sharing insights internally to improve organizational practices.
  • Regular travel to client sites for surveys and meetings is expected, including overnight stays.

Required Qualifications and Skills

  • Degree in Building Surveying or related field, or equivalent practical site experience.
  • Valid full Irish driving license and access to a personal vehicle.
  • Basic knowledge of fire safety design principles and guidance for various building types.
  • Preferred but not mandatory: experience with intrusive external wall surveys across diverse building types such as high-rise residential, offices, retail centers, and historic structures.
  • Preferred but not mandatory: experience with fire compartmentation inspections focusing on internal fire stopping and advising contractors per manufacturer guidelines.
  • Proficiency in preparing technical reports based on site inspections using bespoke digital software and Microsoft Word.
  • Ability to work independently and efficiently manage workload.
  • Willingness to expand skills through team resources and expertise.
  • Desirable but not essential: familiarity with fire risk assessment processes and general risk awareness in the built environment.
  • Knowledge of construction methodologies, fire performance of external wall materials, and cavity barrier installations.
  • Understanding of passive fire protection products, testing standards, and manufacturer installation instructions.
  • Experience or awareness of refurbishment projects and managing onsite contractor relations.
