Role Overview

The Director of Software Engineering leads multiple teams or manages a small to medium portfolio of products, focusing on people leadership and process improvement within an agile framework. This role helps teams operate autonomously while aligning with corporate objectives and strategic vision.

Key Responsibilities

• Lead and mentor various software engineering teams to meet organizational goals.
• Ensure the quality and timely delivery of multiple software projects.
• Establish clear goals and metrics to track success and identify enhancements.
• Manage staffing, budgets, skill development, and acquisition of necessary tools and technologies.
• Conduct succession planning for critical roles within the agile teams.
• Oversee performance management and disciplinary actions as necessary.
• Recruit and retain top engineering talent.
• Integrate engineering disciplines including software development, quality assurance, and DevOps.
• Collaborate across functions to produce high-quality automated solutions that reflect customer needs and market trends.
• Promote information sharing to strengthen organizational effectiveness.
• Ensure adherence to company policies, procedures, including confidentiality and HIPAA compliance.
• Address escalated issues from teams and communicate with senior leadership when needed.
• Contribute to technology roadmap delivery within budgetary constraints.
• Represent the company at industry events and in interactions with key external stakeholders.
• Foster a culture of growth by supporting employee professional development, coaching, mentoring, and promoting continuous learning.
• Participate in an on-call rotation to manage critical issues during off-hours according to defined SLAs.

Job Requirements

• Over 12 years of relevant experience, ideally including software engineering.
• At least 6 years managing diverse teams and departments.
• Comprehensive knowledge of industry concepts, practices, and procedures.
• A demonstrated growth mindset and a proactive approach to receiving feedback.
• Exceptional motivational, coaching, and mentoring abilities.
• Strong interpersonal skills and comfort with constructive conflict resolution.
• Excellent verbal and written communication competencies.
• Proven leadership supporting autonomous teams towards unified objectives.
• Willing to take calculated risks and make decisions under pressure while owning their outcomes.

Education

A bachelor's degree in computer science, a related technical field, or equivalent relevant experience is required.

Physical and Work Environment

• Primarily sedentary work involving extended periods of sitting.
• Occasional exertion of up to 10 pounds of force.
• Frequent activities include lifting, carrying, pushing, pulling, and repetitive motions.
• Indoor office environment conditions.
• Up to 25% local travel, generally for training purposes.
