Role Overview

This position sits within the plant leadership team and is responsible for leading engineering services while driving projects linked to productivity improvement, energy management, utility optimization, and related plant enhancements.

Core Engineering Scope

The role covers end-to-end engineering leadership across mechanical, electrical, instrumentation, utilities, civil upkeep, and project execution. It includes responsibility for the maintenance, troubleshooting, and reliability of chemical process equipment, manufacturing machinery, plant utilities, and supporting infrastructure.

• Oversee preventive and breakdown maintenance, troubleshooting, and upkeep of process equipment such as fat splitting systems, fatty acid distillation units, glycerine evaporation units, and mechanical vapour compressors.
• Handle maintenance and performance of utilities including compressors, boilers, steam generators, chillers, diesel generators, transformers, micro turbines, evaporator condensers, and ETP/STP systems.
• Manage piping networks used for process water, ETP sludge, drains, oil, distillates, glycerine, and other by-products.
• Support upkeep of soap process equipment, including saponification systems, kettles, crutchers, heat exchangers, barometric condensers, driers, bucket elevators, and continuous saponification lines.
• Maintain toilet soap production equipment such as simplex/duplex/vacuum plodders, roll mills, stampers, wrapping and banding machines, case packers, and palletizers.
• Take care of ancillary systems such as blenders, mixers, batch vessels, silos, feeders, conveyors, pulverizers, agitators, valves, gates, airlocks, dust collection systems, and oil storage tanks.
• Manage electrical infrastructure including HT lines, 33 KV yard equipment, transformers, CTPT, HT panels, PCC, MCC, VCC, APFC panels, DG sets, and high-capacity induction motors.
• Plan and execute preventive, predictive, and breakdown maintenance to ensure continuous equipment availability for production.
• Track power and steam usage and drive reduction initiatives through periodic review and energy-saving actions.
• Oversee instrumentation systems such as PLC/SCADA, flow and mass flow meters, VFDs, pneumatic control valves, level gauges, and weighing systems.
• Supervise civil maintenance works including structural integrity, roads, painting, building repairs, and general facility upkeep.
• Manage maintenance budgets, consumables, and spare inventory.
• Prepare capex proposals for machinery replacement, energy conservation, productivity improvement, expansion, product additions, diversification, and automation.
• Deliver daily departmental activities and projects within safety, cost, and schedule targets.
• Coordinate with suppliers, contractors, statutory bodies, legal authorities, and internal teams to achieve departmental goals.
• Liaise with local agencies such as Boiler Inspectorate, Gas Authority of India Ltd, and the Electricity Board for work-related matters.
• Lead contractor management for fabrication, maintenance, project work, safety oversight, documentation, and reporting.
• Ensure adherence to ISO, GMP, TPM, and TQM requirements.

Experience and Qualifications

The role calls for a B.E. in Mechanical Engineering or an equivalent qualification from a reputed institute. An energy management qualification is preferred.

Candidates should bring senior-level experience, ideally as a Plant Engineering Head, with hands-on responsibility for the full engineering function in a large FMCG manufacturing environment.

Relevant background should include maintenance or engineering of continuous process plants and chemical plants, particularly those involving soap, liquid, gel, and paste manufacturing equipment and associated utilities.

Additional exposure in process utility equipment selection and sizing, energy reduction, IoT, and Industry 4.0 applications for manufacturing and utilities will be valuable.

Skills and Competencies

The position requires a strong engineering leader who can guide a large team of mechanical, electrical, and instrumentation professionals, as well as technicians and contractors.

Important capabilities include budget control, technical problem-solving, construction and statutory code knowledge, utility costing, stakeholder management, multitasking in demanding situations, and proficiency in MS Office and SAP.
