About the role

Newsweek is a long-established global media company with a reach of around 100 million people each month across print and digital platforms. It publishes news, opinion, visuals, graphics and video, including international editions in EMEA and Asia.

The Editor, Subscriber Content role is focused on producing fast-moving, subscriber-first commentary that strengthens Newsweek’s subscription offering. Working under the Senior Editor, Subscriber Content, the position calls for sharp news judgment, strong writing, and the ability to turn breaking developments into clear, useful analysis for a paying audience.

This is a hands-on editorial position centered on execution rather than management or strategy. The work involves writing, revising, packaging and supporting the subscriber workflow, especially around political, global, cultural and breaking-news coverage. The editor is expected to explain why stories matter, what has changed, what the stakes are, and how subscribers should interpret developments in a crowded news cycle.

The role requires quick response to briefs, disciplined revision, strong standards judgment, and the ability to produce clean, accurate copy under pressure and often to tight deadlines. It also involves supporting newsletters and other audience-facing formats when needed. This is a full-time onsite role, based in the United States, with work Monday through Friday and occasional weekend shifts.

What you'll do

  • Create fast-turnaround commentary for subscribers on breaking, developing and agenda-setting stories, adding context and analysis rather than simple summary.
  • Spot angles that will matter to subscribers across U.S. and international news, then shape them into strong pieces with a clear point of view and a well-defined frame.
  • Deliver clean copy quickly under deadline pressure, including first drafts, updates and rewrites while preserving accuracy, balance and structure.
  • Work from senior editorial briefs and respond constructively to edits, including changes to intros, nut graphs, headlines, structure, emphasis and framing.
  • Write pieces that spell out the context, consequences and likely next steps behind a story so subscribers understand its importance.
  • Prepare stories for publication in the CMS by handling headlines, decks, standfirsts, captions, links, keywords and related metadata.
  • Coordinate with editors to make sure stories are publication-ready, including selecting suitable artwork, embeds and related links where appropriate.
  • Support newsletter production by suggesting stories, drafting summaries and preparing display copy under senior direction.
  • Provide occasional help on other audience-facing formats such as short video, talking points or promotional editorial material.
  • Stay on top of the live news cycle and raise timely opportunities for subscriber commentary or follow-up coverage.
  • Apply sound judgment on media law and editorial standards, including defamation, privacy, reporting restrictions, copyright and fair use, and escalate concerns when needed.
  • Use AI tools carefully and responsibly, with human oversight and verification of any output before publication.
  • Work closely with editorial, newsletter, video and audience teams to keep the subscriber workflow organized and efficient.
  • Carry out any other reasonable duties needed to support the business.

What we’re looking for

  • Strong knowledge of U.S. and international current affairs, with the ability to judge what will matter most to a subscription audience.
  • Proven ability to write quickly and accurately in a digital newsroom, including during breaking-news shifts and across multiple deadlines.
  • Experience producing commentary, analysis or interpretive journalism that offers readers a meaningful point of view.
  • Solid sourcing instincts and a strong commitment to accuracy, fairness and transparency.
  • Comfort working in CMS publishing systems and handling presentation details such as metadata, links, visuals, tags, captions and story formatting.
  • Interest in or experience with subscriber products, newsletters or other engagement-focused editorial work.
  • Helpful, though not essential, experience with video, audio, social or other multi-format journalism.
  • Working knowledge of media law and editorial risk, with confidence to raise concerns and seek guidance when necessary.
  • Excellent communication and teamwork skills, plus the ability to stay calm, professional and precise under pressure.

Compensation and schedule

The salary range for this position is $90,000 to $110,000, depending on experience. The role is full-time, Monday to Friday, with occasional weekend work.
