Job Summary
As a Customs Agent with DHL Express in Kingston, Jamaica, you will support the smooth flow of international shipments by reviewing import and export paperwork, applying the correct customs classifications, and handling electronic filings for timely clearance. You will work closely with pickup and delivery teams to make sure consignments meet company standards as well as government requirements, helping goods move efficiently while maintaining a high level of service.
Core Responsibilities
- Prepare all required customs paperwork so import, export, and transshipment processes are completed promptly and efficiently for arriving and departing shipments.
- Record incoming and outgoing correspondence and maintain organized tracking of documentation.
- Carry out both electronic and manual record-keeping and filing duties.
- Enter data into relevant systems, including Islander, and complete online post-entry submissions where required.
- Coordinate with customs officials, government agencies, DHL teams, and customers on matters related to customs clearance.
- Stay updated on changes in customs laws, rules, procedures, and enforcement practices to ensure ongoing compliance.
- Work to improve customs clearance workflows so service standards are met or exceeded.
- Ensure the station remains fully compliant with customs and tax regulations, along with DHL policies and internal procedures.
- Produce accurate and timely reports on customs duties, tariffs, fees, and taxes to support cost control.
- Prepare and move international manifests through the process to support quick customs clearance.
- Maintain customs records securely and in a way that allows easy retrieval when needed.
- Monitor SQI standards and report any variances as required.
- Keep daily logs of shipments cleared by DHL, including exports.
- Maintain daily activity records for brokerage staff.
- Track and log delays in clearance and other related issues each day.
- Support customer service by responding to inquiries, handling complaints, and advising on documentation requirements.
- Help prevent losses caused by internal delays.
- Provide origin stations with local charges, required documents, and other necessary information.
- Oversee contact with consignees regarding duty amounts, bureau of standards matters, paperwork queries held by customs, and other customs-related concerns for freight and express shipments.
- Resolve shipment discrepancies and take appropriate action for dangerous or suspicious consignments.
- Recreate original documents for customers who have misplaced them.
- Perform other related duties as assigned.
Skills and Qualifications
- Strong written and spoken communication abilities.
- Good customer service and interpersonal skills.
- Practical understanding of computer use and related information systems.
- Knowledge of international trade rules and standards, including dangerous goods transport regulations.
- Valid General Driver’s License with a safe driving record.
- No criminal convictions.
- Customs Brokers License.
- High School Diploma or equivalent.
- At least one year of experience in customs brokering or freight forwarding.
- Fluency in English, both written and verbal.
