About the Role
Detroit Pistons is looking for an Associate Counsel to join a collaborative, high-performance organization that aims to create impact both in basketball and in the community. In this position, you will partner closely with the Vice President of Legal and Business Affairs to manage a broad range of legal, regulatory, and business matters across the organization.
The role centers on maintaining compliance with applicable laws and NBA rules, reducing organizational risk through sound policies and procedures, and supporting litigation and dispute management. You will also help with contract review and negotiation for both business and basketball operations, contribute to strategic and corporate development efforts, and advise departments on entertainment-related relationships and initiatives.
In addition, this position involves providing practical legal guidance across the business, helping shape internal policies, and supporting cross-functional decision-making in a fast-moving professional sports environment.
Key Responsibilities
- Prepare, revise, and approve revenue, vendor, and other legal agreements for teams across the organization.
- Coordinate legal workflows between internal departments and outside parties.
- Assess proposed business arrangements for legal and regulatory exposure, while ensuring adherence to state and local laws as well as NBA bylaws and regulations.
- Manage and direct outside law firms and consultants to complete assigned legal work.
- Work with Human Resources on employment-related legal matters and conduct policy issues.
- Review and advise on internal policies related to data privacy and artificial intelligence.
Requirements
- At least 3 years of legal work experience, ideally in sports or entertainment law.
- Juris Doctor degree from a top law school and current bar admission.
- Bachelor’s degree from a top college or university.
- Strong written and verbal communication abilities.
- Excellent interpersonal skills and a collaborative, problem-solving approach.
