Role Overview
The Declarations Agent will play a crucial role in ensuring efficient, timely, and cost-effective international freight movements by handling customs documentation, routing, and regulatory compliance. This position requires building and maintaining productive relationships with freight forwarding vendors and regulatory bodies while providing outstanding customer service.
Responsibilities
- Examine import documentation and guide the operations team on local customs requirements.
- Ensure all clearance-related documents are complete and accurately lodged with customs authorities.
- Provide tax estimations and assist in identifying accurate tariff codes.
- Advise on shipment documentation, including applicability of the correct APC based on shipment type.
- Monitor shipment arrivals, manifest lodgments, cargo discharge, and transfer to the Inland Container Depot or clearance point.
- Ensure timely and accurate customs declarations upon receipt of client clearance documents.
- Process documentation using systems such as TANCIS, Single Window, TBS, GCLA, and DPW.
- Represent clients during inquiries from government agencies regarding tariff codes, freight charges, or shipments.
- Keep the operations team updated on changes to customs procedures, tariffs, and relevant regulatory developments.
Required Qualifications and Skills
- Minimum of three years of experience in freight forwarding, particularly in customs operations.
- Diploma in Clearing and Forwarding or possession of an East Africa Customs and Freight Forwarding Practicing Certificate (EACFFPC).
- Possession of a valid motorcycle license or ability to travel independently to ports, airports, customs offices, and other sites as necessary.
- Thorough knowledge of government procedures and customs laws related to import, export, and transit of air, sea, and road freight.
- Strong understanding and accurate application of HS codes.
- Proficiency in computer applications relevant to the role.
- Cultural sensitivity and ability to communicate effectively with individuals who may have limited English language skills.
