About the team and opportunity

The Cities & Places team at Jacobs operates across multiple scales, from regional and city planning through to neighbourhoods, streets, and individual buildings. The group uses an integrated design approach that combines planning, design, and delivery in a practical and coordinated way.

The wider business brings together engineers, architects, surveyors, urban designers, project managers, and transport planners to produce clear, implementable solutions for clients in Ireland, the UK, and beyond.

This opportunity sits within the Active Travel & Urban Transport team and is based on a hybrid working model from the Dublin or Cork office, alongside work at client locations. It is a strong fit for someone with experience in sustainable transport, placemaking, or road-space reallocation, and who is comfortable working across different geographies within multidisciplinary settings.

What you will do

• Take the lead on the technical development and delivery of traffic engineering and active travel assignments.
• Prepare and assess high-quality drawings, reports, designs, and tender documentation.
• Use Irish standards and guidance to create solutions that are practical and tailored to their setting.
• Contribute to project and client management, including programme, resourcing, quality, and commercial outcomes.
• Communicate effectively with clients, local authorities, and other stakeholders.
• Review and assure deliverables so that design quality, consistency, and technical standards are maintained.
• Support junior colleagues through mentoring and help foster a strong, collaborative team environment.
• Assist with business development, bid submissions, and wider client engagement.

Technical background and experience needed

• A degree, or an equivalent qualification, in engineering, transport, or a related discipline.
• A solid technical foundation in traffic engineering.
• Experience with junction and road-link analysis and modelling.
• Knowledge of traffic signal design.
• Ability to design road markings and traffic signing.
• Understanding of pavement, drainage, and utilities design.
• Experience preparing tender packages and works specifications.
• Background in urban streets, active travel, bus priority, public transport, and/or public realm schemes.
• Strong working knowledge of key Irish standards and frameworks, including DMURS, the Cycle Design Manual, the Capital Works Management Framework, the Transport Appraisal Framework, and NTA Project Approval Guidelines, plus familiarity with relevant TII standards and sustainable transport policy.
• Proven ability to deliver projects through all design stages, from concept through detailed design and support during delivery, including site supervision.
• Capacity to balance workload effectively while mentoring junior staff and contributing to team growth.
• Experience supporting bids, engaging with clients, and keeping up with emerging best practice and industry trends.
• A clear commitment to sharing knowledge, developing people, and demonstrating technical leadership.
