Position Overview
This full-time probation officer role is an entry to developing-level position within the Colorado Judicial Branch. The work centers on client investigation, assessment, supervision, resource coordination, and monitoring of individuals required by the court to complete services. The selected person will also complete mandatory training and development programs.
Work Location
The position may be assigned to one of four offices in Colorado: Aspen, Glenwood Springs, Rifle, or Meeker. Final placement will depend on departmental requirements. This is an in-office role.
Compensation and Job Details
Job code: R58000. This is a non-exempt position with a full-time salary range of $57,840.00 to $83,869.00. Pay will be based on experience and Judicial compensation guidelines.
Mission
The Judicial Department supports equal access to justice, public safety, and the rule of law across Colorado. Its courts and probation teams focus on fair and timely dispute resolution, assistance for families, litigants, and victims, client rehabilitation, and active community involvement.
Core Duties
- Manage cases by recording client activity, reviewing documents and court orders, and maintaining client electronic files.
- Meet clients in person, carry out interviews, and perform continuing assessments to identify treatment needs and community risk levels.
- Create case plans that support supervision goals and compliance with court conditions.
- Evaluate, prioritize, and respond to urgent situations and possible risks in office and field settings.
- Calm escalated or aggressive individuals and handle potentially violent encounters appropriately.
- Prepare reports that evaluate criminal behavior and provide the court with relevant information and sentencing options.
- Submit detailed compliance and revocation reports while protecting confidential information, keep the court updated, and provide testimony when required.
- Share information about victim rights with staff, stakeholders, and the public, and respond to community concerns about clients and probationers.
- Collect victim statements and positions for court proceedings.
- Coordinate with other judicial districts and other states on victim-related matters.
- Attend meetings and complete required training.
- Carry out other assigned duties as needed.
Supervision and Working Style
This role may occasionally direct helpers, assistants, seasonal staff, interns, or temporary employees. Work is generally semi-complex. The position involves regular interaction with coworkers, stakeholders, and members of the public, including difficult conversations, sensitive issues, and situations that require tact, professionalism, and strong interpersonal judgment. Decisions are made within established policies and procedures, with periodic review of performance.
Knowledge, Skills, and Responsibility
The job requires broad practical knowledge of work processes and the ability to complete a wide range of tasks, including some that are complex, with limited need for guidance. The role may also support data collection related to budget recommendations and may help monitor program or division expenditures.
Minimum Qualifications
Candidates must meet one of the following combinations of education and experience: a bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university in criminal justice, sociology, psychology, human services, or a related field; or an associate’s degree in one of those fields plus two years of related work experience in criminal justice, law enforcement, social work, psychology, or a related area; or a high school diploma or GED plus four years of related work experience, with the experience substituting for formal education on a year-for-year basis.
Licenses and Certifications
No license or certification is required.
Physical and Environmental Conditions
The work may require exerting up to 35 pounds of force occasionally, up to 20 pounds frequently, and up to 20 pounds constantly to move objects. The environment is primarily office-based, with occasional outdoor work and occasional exposure to unpleasant conditions, hazards, risk, hostile or irate individuals, people with violent backgrounds, communicable diseases, and bodily fluids.
