Role Overview

This role is focused on protecting safe navigation and supporting efficient marine activity across the ports and territorial waters of Abu Dhabi Ports. The operator helps deliver essential safety and pollution-prevention coverage by tracking vessel movements, coordinating nautical support services on time, and providing an initial response during maritime emergencies.

Key Responsibilities

  • Observe vessel traffic and control movements in line with all applicable local, national, and international rules.
  • Safeguard navigation within the assigned VTS zone.
  • Keep VHF radio contact with all traffic in the assigned area on the designated channel or channels.
  • Issue routine VHF safety broadcasts with navigation updates, visibility conditions, and weather reports.
  • Monitor anchorages to ensure they are used efficiently and that safe separation is maintained.
  • Maintain radar, CCTV, and AIS surveillance across the full VTS area.
  • Operate vessel traffic management systems carefully according to current conditions to support safe traffic flow.
  • Take proactive action to reduce the risk of dangerous maritime incidents.
  • Start and support emergency response procedures, including coordination with emergency services when needed.
  • Coordinate arrivals, departures, and vessel movements to support voyage planning and forecasting.
  • Escalate the following issues to the VTS Supervisor: equipment faults, potentially hazardous situations, vessels failing to comply with laws, unsafe or erratic navigation, undeclared hazardous cargo, and vessel deficiencies that were not previously reported.
  • Perform other related duties as assigned.
  • Follow safe-work instructions, SOPs, and the Near Miss / Incident reporting process in the Senyar system.

Qualifications and Requirements

  • High School Diploma.
  • VTS certification record with C0103-1 Certificate, or a maritime/transport qualification with relevant experience and C0103-1, or experience in maritime operations with a valid C0103-1.
  • Strong spoken and written English skills for clear reporting, stakeholder interaction, negotiation, and conflict resolution.
  • Ability to work well in a team and support colleagues when needed.
  • Good computer literacy, including familiarity with common applications and communication equipment.
  • Ability to maintain confidentiality and remain professional when dealing with difficult situations or third parties.
  • Capable of working efficiently toward defined objectives with minimal supervision.
  • Ability to monitor the operational and functional integrity of communication systems, computers, and navigational aids.
  • Knowledge of maritime regulations and terminology.
  • At least 2 years of experience as a VTS Operator.
  • Relevant regional experience is preferred.
