Role overview
The Network Inspector supports the safe and reliable operation of the Luas light rail network in Dublin. The position focuses on inspecting network infrastructure, tracking nearby third-party development, and helping ensure that any approved works are carried out in a way that protects railway safety and service quality.
This role works in close coordination with teams across Light Rail Network Management, the safety function, and the Luas Operations and Maintenance Contractor.
Key duties
- Complete weekly condition surveys of Luas network infrastructure, excluding Energy and Systems, and monitor adjacent third-party development activity near the light rail route as defined by TII and the Luas Operator.
- Support the Adjacent Development Manager in reviewing third-party planning applications for nearby developments and help coordinate internal TII input so that concerns are captured and addressed.
- Make sure approved adjacent developments are implemented in line with safe railway operations.
- Carry out routine on-site inspections of the light rail network for TII, and jointly with the Light Rail Maintenance Contractor when needed.
- Prepare weekly infrastructure inspection reports for the Adjacent Development Manager or Senior Asset Manager, highlighting any defects, risks, or nearby development issues.
- Escalate urgent matters without delay, track corrective actions, and submit closure updates when required.
- Monitor unauthorized adjacent development work that has not been approved by TII and may affect safe operation of the network.
- Visit adjacent development sites regularly to verify progress, check compliance with agreed conditions, and confirm that the network remains safe.
- Maintain a live register of Luas infrastructure faults and defects, including the date, location, issue type, ownership, proposed action, and target fix date.
- Assist with oversight of the Luas Operations and Maintenance Contractor’s maintenance duties across track, infrastructure, buildings, and related assets.
- Provide on-site support for Network Enhancement and lifecycle asset renewal projects when required.
- Carry out any other reasonable duties appropriate to the grade.
Experience and qualifications
- A degree or other third-level professional qualification at NFQ Level 8, or equivalent, in Civil Engineering or a related discipline.
- At least 5 years of experience in project and/or contract management within engineering, construction, or asset management, ideally in transport or infrastructure, with relevant site experience.
- Working knowledge of railway operating settings and/or other safety-critical construction environments.
- Experience with hands-on construction activities in challenging conditions, including rigorous safety requirements and unsocial hours.
- Strong training background in the use and application of construction tools, materials, plant, and on-track plant.
- Good understanding of programme management, project management, and risk management.
- Strong commitment to public safety, staff safety, and the safety of those working on behalf of TII and the Luas operator.
- Full clean driver’s licence.
- Ability to work unsocial hours and night shifts if required.
- Fluent written and spoken English.
