Overview
This is a single contractual part-time opening with a 992-hour commitment at the Maryland State Police Forensic Sciences Division headquarters in the Biology Section, located in Baltimore County, Maryland.
Role purpose
The position focuses on carefully recording, organizing, and preparing evidence for outside laboratory testing after it enters the Biology Section through the Central Receiving Unit. The role also may include logging DNA samples taken from arrestees and convicted offenders.

Key duties
- Receive, secure, track, and document evidence submitted to the Central Receiving Unit for the Biology Section.
- Prepare evidence and case materials for transfer to the contracted laboratory for serology and DNA analysis.
- Arrange shipment of case materials to the outside lab and process the return of items after testing is finished.
- Keep records complete and accurate so the full chain of handling can be reviewed in court if necessary.
- Update the Biology Section logbooks so outsourcing status and case movement are properly tracked.
- Enter arrestee and convicted offender DNA samples into the MSP FSD sample tracking system.
- Support inventory activities and carry out other administrative tasks as assigned.
Minimum qualifications
Applicants should have a high school diploma from an accredited school or a high school equivalency credential, plus two years of experience in administrative work or in handling and inventorying evidence.
Equivalent qualifications
- An associate degree from an accredited college or university may replace the required experience.
- Military service experience in a non-commissioned officer administration role, or in administrative, clerical, or office services specialties within the administrative support field, may be accepted year for year in place of the experience requirement.
Preferred background
- Experience following chain-of-custody or evidence-handling procedures.
- Background in customer service, especially when working with civilian and sworn law enforcement personnel at local, state, or federal levels.
- Experience entering data into electronic database systems.
License requirement
If assigned duties involving vehicle operation, the employee must hold a valid Maryland motor vehicle operator’s license.
Selection process
Only applicants who satisfy the minimum qualifications will be reviewed. Candidates must provide complete and accurate application information. Those selected may be classified as BEST QUALIFIED, BETTER QUALIFIED, or QUALIFIED and remain eligible for consideration for at least one year from the application date.
Assessment process
Selection is based on an evaluation of education, training, and work experience related to the role. A qualifications supplement may be required, or scoring may rely on the application alone. Applicants should expect an interview, a background investigation that includes a polygraph examination, and substance abuse testing.
Benefits
Contractual employees in an agency covered by the State Employee and Retiree Health and Welfare Benefits Program may qualify for subsidized health coverage if they have a current contract and work at least 30 hours per week, or an average of 130 hours per month. Eligible employees pay 25% of medical and prescription premiums, including premiums for enrolled dependents, while the State pays the remaining 75%. Dental coverage, accidental death and dismemberment insurance, and life insurance may also be elected, but the employee pays the full cost for those options.
Leave for contractual employees may accrue at one hour for every 30 hours worked, up to a maximum of 40 hours per calendar year.
