Role overview
This position is based in Tucson, Arizona and involves delivering critical pre-hospital care from a helicopter setting. The role suits an experienced paramedic with recent 911 exposure who is ready to work in a fast-moving air medical environment while continuing professional development with employer support.
As part of a clinical flight crew, you will provide advanced life support during transport and help uphold the highest standards of patient and flight safety throughout every mission.
Core responsibilities
- Deliver advanced pre-hospital life support from first patient contact until handoff to the receiving medical facility, while keeping complete and accurate patient care records.
- Work within the authorized scope of practice for the state and the air medical service, and keep clinical skills sharp through ongoing lab and field-based learning.
- Share learning needs with the Medical Base Supervisor and Medical Education Coordinator as needed.
- Maintain proof of required licenses, certifications, continuing education, aviation and safety training, OSHA and HIPAA training, clinical rotations, and advanced procedures.
- Attend at least six education sessions each year that are relevant to the role.
- Understand how to use and perform routine checks on aircraft medical equipment and supplies, report failures promptly, and take the initial steps needed to get equipment repaired.
- Keep onboard supplies stocked and the aircraft clean and mission-ready for rapid response.
- Take part in patient follow-up, referring-facility outreach, marketing, and education activities.
- Join pre-mission briefings, mission debriefings, and complete all required records.
- Help with the pre-flight checklist and assist the pilot when requested, including radio, navigation, and visual observation support.
- Follow all safety procedures to protect yourself, other crew members, the patient, and the equipment; conduct aircraft safety briefings when needed.
- Support neonatal and pediatric transports as a clinical resource and perform advanced skills and procedures that are approved by the medical director.
- Act as a clinical role model, educator, and resource, and participate in department projects, committees, research, publishing opportunities, and professional activities.
- Perform any additional duties assigned.
Requirements
- High school diploma or GED plus at least 3 years of related experience and/or training, or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
- Bachelor’s degree in a health-related field is preferred.
- At least 3 years of recent experience in a high-volume 911 system.
- Previous critical care transport and flight experience is an advantage.
- Must stay within a maximum weight of 225 pounds, including an empty flight suit and boots, as required for the clinical flight crew.
- Must be able to work a flexible schedule, including overtime and 24/7 on-call rotation.
- Must be dependable, self-driven, and comfortable working in a changing environment.
- Strong communication, presentation, collaboration, critical thinking, prioritization, multitasking, and attention-to-detail skills are needed.
- Proficiency with Microsoft Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and Outlook is required.
- Regular attendance is required, and travel may account for about 5% of the role.
- No supervisory duties are attached to this position.
- Required credentials include: registered EMT-P license in the state(s) served; specialty certification FP-C or CCP-C within 2 years of hire; current BLS/CPR, ACLS, PALS or equivalent, and advanced provider ITLS or PHTLS where required; one approved advanced trauma course before completion of third-rider orientation; NRP before completion of third-rider orientation; and NIMS IS-100, 200, 700, 800 plus HazMat at hire.
- National certification may be needed to satisfy state licensure rules.
