Firefighter

Job Overview

The Firefighter role focuses on safeguarding people and assets by carrying out emergency response, rescue, and fire suppression duties during incidents such as structural fires, road accidents, floods, bomb threats or incidents, and releases of hazardous materials. The position also includes support for disaster response and other emergency situations.

Key Duties

• Carry out search, rescue, and fire suppression activities during fires, accidents, floods, bomb-related incidents, and dangerous substance spills.
• Handle emergency response vehicles, equipment, and tools in a safe and effective manner.
• Use hand and power tools to ventilate buildings, set up and climb ladders, remove hoses from the truck bed, connect hoses to hydrants and pump systems, and operate charged hose lines of different sizes for firefighting.
• Use pumps, foam-making equipment, boom nozzles, ground sweep nozzles, and related firefighting systems.
• Complete salvage and overhaul work to reduce property loss after an incident.
• Take part in station drills and training sessions for emergency procedures.
• Respond to hazardous materials incidents in line with required procedures and standards.
• Carry out any other tasks assigned as needed.

Experience and Education

A minimum of 1 year of firefighting experience is required. Candidates should have a High School Diploma or an equivalent qualification, and an Associate’s Degree is preferred. Certifications such as IFSAC, DOD, or National Pro-Board credentials in Fire Fighter II, Hazardous Materials Operations, and Aircraft Rescue and Fire Fighting are expected, with ARFF not required for departments that do not handle aircraft firefighting. A current state certification must be held and maintained. Preferred additional credentials include DoD, ProBoard, or IFSAC Driver Operator Pumper, Driver Operator ARFF, and Driver Operator MWS. A Telecommunicator I and II certificate is also required. A valid driver’s license is mandatory. Further experience or education may be requested based on the contract or assignment.

Working Conditions

This role requires the ability to perform all duties associated with interior structural firefighting in line with OSHA 1910.156 requirements. Work may take place in remote, uncomfortable, and difficult living conditions. Employees should expect long hours, exposure to weather, hazardous environments, and the need to move on short notice under adverse circumstances.
