Department Overview

The Melbourne Design Centre operates within Motorola Solutions' Software Enterprise division, concentrating on optimizing workflows and enhancing operational efficiency via a flexible, integrated mobility solution aimed at field responders.

Job Description and Responsibilities

• Work closely with your team to design, develop, maintain, and support core platform applications.
• Ensure high software quality through early integration, thorough code reviews, and comprehensive test coverage.
• Actively minimize technical debt by regularly refactoring code.
• Develop secure applications by adhering to defense-in-depth principles.
• Design software architecture spanning multiple platforms and technologies.
• Follow best architectural patterns to keep code extensible and maintainable.
• Automate processes, enhance tooling, and manage continuous integration/deployment pipelines.
• Monitor application services, handle incidents promptly, and contribute to reviews post-incident.
• Support a culture of continuous learning by engaging in training, workshops, and sharing innovative ideas.
• Drive ongoing improvements by identifying enhancement areas, actively participating in retrospectives, and contributing to key performance metrics.
• Prioritize customer needs by asking insightful questions, targeting appropriate problems, and crafting excellent user experiences.
• Experiment with various solutions and disseminate findings within the team.
• Promote engineering best practices and initiatives.

Required Knowledge and Technical Skills

• Comprehensive understanding of the Android platform and ecosystem.
• Proficiency with Android SDK, including efficient UI layouts and application lifecycle management.
• Strong skills in Kotlin programming language for Android development.
• Experience with Java and JVM; knowledge of other languages is beneficial.
• Good grasp of object-oriented programming concepts and design patterns.
• Familiarity with reactive and functional programming paradigms.
• Solid understanding of software architecture principles.
• Experience designing HTTP and RESTful APIs.
• Ability to write automated unit, integration, UI, snapshot, and performance tests.
• Knowledge of CI/CD pipelines and configuration management practices.
• Proficiency with Git and related version control tools.
• Working knowledge of OpenAPI and Swagger specifications.
• Experience with Agile methodologies such as Scrum and Kanban.

Desirable Additional Skills

• Familiarity with cloud platforms including AWS, Google Cloud Platform, and Azure.
• Experience with local and remote data storage technologies, e.g., SQLDelight, Room, NoSQL databases.
• Applying advanced testing methods like TDD, BDD, and ATDD.
• Exposure to iOS development using Swift, SwiftUI, or UIKit.

Experience Requirements

• A minimum of five years in professional software engineering roles.
• At least four years specializing in native Android development with strong expertise in Kotlin.
• Proven ability to architect and successfully release complex applications to production.
