Job description
About the Role
Amazon Web Services (AWS) Infrastructure Services is responsible for the design, planning, delivery, and operation of global AWS infrastructure that keeps the cloud operational. This team supports all data centers, including servers, storage, networking, power, and cooling systems, ensuring uninterrupted access to AWS services. Joining this team offers the chance to work alongside a diverse group of engineers, supply chain experts, security specialists, and operations managers to maintain high safety, security, and cost efficiency standards.
The Internet Edge Services (IES) group at AWS focuses on transforming global internet connectivity by developing innovative software platforms. Its mission is to redefine how the internet's edge functions globally through a software-defined, commodity hardware-based, and fully programmable Border Network platform.
As a Software Development Engineer on the IES team, you will build and operate Catographer — an intelligent control system that directs Amazon's software-defined network at the internet edge. Catographer ingests real-time routing data to optimize traffic flow across Amazon's border network, translating routing decisions into instructions for network controllers. This enables rapid, reliable traffic management at scale by replacing legacy routing with a modern, scalable platform built with Rust, improving network reliability, minimizing failure impact, and enabling advanced traffic engineering with millisecond responsiveness.
Key Responsibilities
- Translate complex technical and functional needs from a customer-first perspective into detailed software designs.
- Advocate for prioritization of features and enhancements with leadership.
- Deliver high-quality feature improvements punctually.
- Stay updated with evolving technology trends and collaborate on integrating new technologies into the platform.
- Work closely with software and network engineers to develop, demonstrate, and iterate solutions.
- Monitor system health continuously, troubleshoot customer issues, and recommend enhancements to increase robustness.
- Contribute code to various system aspects such as alarm rules, optimization algorithms, and new capabilities.
- Share expertise actively within the Internet Edge Services organization.
Qualifications and Skills
- At least 3 years of professional software development experience (non-internship).
- Minimum 2 years designing or architecting new and existing systems with considerations of design patterns, reliability, and scalability.
- Proficiency in at least one programming language.
- Preferred: 3+ years full software development lifecycle experience including coding standards, code reviews, source control, build processes, testing, and operations.
- Preferred: Bachelor’s degree in computer science or equivalent field.
