Role overview
This position is responsible for providing safe, timely, and efficient transport support for staff, visitors, and materials. The driver also supports daily operational errands assigned by the Logistics and Admin Officer and helps maintain vehicle readiness, safety, and proper documentation.
The role requires careful handling of vehicles and goods, adherence to travel and security procedures, and consistent support for project delivery through reliable transport services.
Core duties
- Take custody of the assigned vehicle and its accessories through the formal handover process and sign the required handover documents.
- Transport staff, guests, and visitors safely and courteously.
- Move materials to the required destinations and take care during loading and unloading.
- Keep vehicle logbooks updated for every trip, fuel use, and repair expense, and make them available for review when needed.
- Prepare and submit a monthly vehicle usage report to the Logistics and Admin Officer.
- Track fuel consumption records accurately and keep them current.
- Check essential fluids and vehicle conditions before driving each day, including engine oil, radiator water, and windscreen washer fluid.
- Review brake and clutch oil, battery water, tire pressure, lights, and indicators on a weekly basis.
- Ensure the assigned vehicle is not used by anyone else unless explicit authorization has been given.
- Keep the vehicle clean, fueled, lubricated, and serviced according to the maintenance schedule.
- Protect all tools, spare tires, accessories, and related materials assigned to the vehicle.
- Perform minor maintenance and repair work within approved limits and report any accidents immediately.
- Use the vehicle only in line with safety, security, traffic, and organizational rules.
- Display the organization’s logo on vehicles whenever it does not compromise staff safety or suit local conditions.
- Park vehicles in secure places during working hours, after hours, and overnight.
- Request repair and maintenance services on time using the prescribed forms and verify garage work against the repair order.
- Keep seat belts clean, use them at all times, and ensure passengers do the same.
- Respect the faith, culture, and dignity of community members, clients, and other passengers.
- Handle confidential matters carefully and only consult senior staff when appropriate.
- Carry out other related duties as assigned.
Requirements
- Completion of 12th grade, or 10th grade under the new education curriculum; an Auto Mechanic diploma or certificate is a plus.
- Valid third-grade driving license.
- At least 2 years of experience with an international NGO or government organization, with a clean driving record.
- Willingness to work on weekends, public holidays, and in difficult weather conditions.
- Strong interpersonal skills and the ability to perform effectively in challenging settings.
- Good spoken and written English.
- Basic computer skills are an advantage.
- Previous vehicle maintenance experience is beneficial.
- Good team-working ability and strong interpersonal communication.
- Knowledge of the local area where the position is based.
- Knowledge of Afar language.
