Job description

About Auckland Youth Voice

Auckland Youth Voice (AYV) is a charitable organisation committed to supporting Youth Voice Groups (YVGs) that are funded by Local Boards across Auckland. These groups provide youth perspectives in local board decision-making and deliver empowering events for young people. AYV was founded by former YVG members to serve as a resource hub and fund holder. The organisation employs Youth Development Facilitators who work alongside YVGs and are guided by the Youth Development Manager.

Position Overview

We are seeking a Youth Development Facilitator to lead and support the Upper Harbour Youth Council (UHYC). This role focuses on strengthening the leadership and civic engagement skills of youth, enhancing the group’s capacity and sustainability, and ensuring smooth transitions between annual cohorts. The position requires travel within the Upper Harbour Local Board area and involves both facilitation and administrative duties.

Key Duties

  • Mentor and develop UHYC members to build their leadership and action-based skills.
  • Lead and collaborate with youth leaders to coordinate group operations, manage volunteers, and oversee budgeting tasks.
  • Implement risk management by ensuring compliance with AYV policies and mitigating potential risks.
  • Support the planning and delivery of an annual calendar of events, projects, and initiatives that engage youth across Upper Harbour.
  • Maintain relationships with AYV, Upper Harbour Local Board, Auckland Council, and other regional youth stakeholders.
  • Prepare and submit regular reports to Auckland Council, the Upper Harbour Local Board, and AYV.
  • Pursue professional development opportunities to enhance skills relevant to youth facilitation.

Candidate Profile

  • Minimum of 1 year of experience in facilitation or youth leadership, including paid or volunteer roles.
  • Proven experience working with young people aged 12-24, through leadership roles or voluntary engagements.
  • Desirable qualifications or ongoing study in youth work, youth development, education, social work, community development, law, political science, or health and wellbeing, though not mandatory.
  • Familiarity with Auckland Council-funded Youth Voice Groups is an advantage but not essential.
  • Interest in local government and some understanding of government systems or processes is preferred.
  • Basic event management abilities, including budgeting, scheduling, and coordinating with external providers.

Contract Details

This contract role runs from early October 2026 through June 30, 2027, with potential for renewal. The average time commitment is 8-10 hours per week, including mandatory weekly UHYC meetings on Mondays from 5-7 pm. Flexibility is offered regarding when the other hours are worked, although workload may fluctuate throughout the year or during school holidays.

Application Instructions

If you are eager to contribute to youth empowerment and civic engagement in Auckland, please submit a CV and cover letter to the provided contact. Applications are accepted on a rolling basis, so early submission is encouraged.
