Job Overview

The Welder (First Class) will be responsible for the fabrication, assembly, and repair of metal parts and structures, employing diverse welding and fabrication processes. This full-time position offers an annual salary between $80,000 and $85,000 plus superannuation, based in Burnie.

Key Responsibilities

• Choose and set up welding equipment, materials, and consumables suitable for welding tasks.
• Interpret technical schematics, blueprints, welding guidelines, and specifications to understand welding requirements.
• Operate MIG welding machinery to weld, join, and fix metal components and structures.
• Align and secure workpieces correctly to meet welding specifications.
• Execute welding on various metal components ensuring adherence to quality and safety standards.
• Inspect finished welds to verify dimensional accuracy, quality standards, and compliance with welding protocols.
• Fix defective welds and damaged metals through procedures like grinding, gouging, and rewelding.
• Complete weld finishing tasks such as grinding and dressing to attain the desired finish and look.
• Utilize measuring and testing tools to confirm weld quality, dimensional precision, and specification compliance.
• Perform welding repairs and upkeep on metal frameworks, machinery, and associated parts.
• Clean and prepare metal surfaces before and after welding for optimal quality.
• Conduct routine maintenance and straightforward troubleshooting of welding apparatus to maintain safety and efficiency.
• Adhere strictly to workplace health, safety standards, welding safety protocols, and industry regulations.
• Collaborate with supervisors, engineers, inspectors, and other trade personnel to complete welding projects proficiently.
• Keep detailed records of welding activities, inspection reports, repairs done, materials used, and work progress.

Required Qualifications and Experience

• Certificate III in Engineering - Fabrication Trade or an equivalent credential.
• At least two years of experience as a Welder (First Class) or in metal fabrication roles.
• Minimum two years hands-on experience with MIG, TIG, and arc welding for structural steel and fabricated metal.
• Proven expertise in the primary welding methods: Gas Metal Arc Welding (GMAW), Shielded Metal Arc Welding (SMAW), and Flux-cored Arc Welding (FCAW).
• Minimum of two years experience reading and interpreting engineering drawings, fabrication blueprints, and technical specs.
• At least two years operating fabrication machinery, welding tools, and metalworking equipment.
• Experience assembling, repairing, and finishing fabricated metal products per engineering standards.
• Strong understanding of welding processes, fabrication techniques, and metal finishing skills.
• Ability to detect welding imperfections, measurement variances, and fabrication problems with accuracy.
• Thorough knowledge of safety procedures, compliance standards in fabrication, and workshop operations.
• Effective communication skills with the ability to collaborate within engineering and fabrication teams.
• High attention to detail and dedication to precise workmanship.
