With a focus on expanding private utility locating capabilities, Verita seeks a skilled Utility Locator who can expertly carry out advanced field locates while also acting as a mentor to the next tier of locating professionals. This hybrid role combines technical expertise and training responsibilities, emphasizing precision and teamwork.

Responsibilities

• Conduct accurate public and private utility locates supporting directional drilling, trenching, and construction projects.
• Confirm bore path and excavation routes to ensure marked utilities are precise before operational work starts.
• Identify potential conflicts with underground utilities, collaborating with project managers, supervisors, utility owners, and on-site crews to resolve them ahead of construction.
• Participate in pre-construction field assessments and site reviews to verify locate completeness and job readiness.
• Locate private utilities beyond the scope of 811 calls, including telecommunications, electric, irrigation, lighting, gas, water, sewer, and other privately-owned systems.
• Utilize electromagnetic locators, transmitters, receivers, and Ground Penetrating Radar (GPR) to verify utility placements, reducing uncertainty in congested areas.
• Interpret various utility documentation such as prints, as-builts, maps, plats, GIS data, and project plans to recognize potential underground issues.
• Record locating activities employing photos, sketches, GPS data, and digital reporting platforms.
• Respond promptly to emergency locate requests, re-marking needs, design verification, and high-priority construction projects.
• Assist with potholing, daylighting, and Subsurface Utility Engineering (SUE) for utility verification purposes.
• Act as the main source of locating expertise for drilling crews by providing guidance on clearances, offsets, and safe excavation methods.
• Ensure quality and accuracy in utility locating to meet company standards and damage prevention policies.
• Maintain company vehicles, locating tools, and related equipment for optimal operation.
• Help onboard and orient new utility locators through coaching and field mentorship.
• Offer ride-alongs and technical coaching to less experienced colleagues.
• Share best practices in utility location, drill path verification, and damage prevention strategies.
• Support quality assurance via field audits and continuous improvement coaching.
• Collaborate with management to enhance locating processes, documentation, and operational efficiency.

Qualifications

Required:

• Minimum of two years’ experience performing public or private underground utility locates.
• A proven safety record demonstrating minimal to no utility location-related damages.
• Skilled in reading utility schematics, prints, maps, plat/quarter-section drawings, and GIS/work order systems.
• Experience operating electromagnetic location devices; familiarity with Ground Penetrating Radar is preferred.
• Knowledgeable about OSHA regulations, One-Call/811 laws, and local marking standards.
• Valid driver’s license and a clean motor vehicle record.
• Capable of independent work, sound judgment, and interpreting unclear or conflicting utility data.
• Strong communication skills for creating field documentation and instructing others.
• Physically able to work outdoors in varied weather, enter confined spaces, and lift items up to 75 pounds.

Preferred:

• Certification as a Locator Technician (CLT), Utility Locator Technician (ULT), or equivalent, or five years of experience.
• Experience as a field trainer, mentor, crew lead, or foreman role.
• Background in Subsurface Utility Engineering (SUE) or locating specialized private utilities.
• Understanding of instructional design, adult learning techniques, or formal train-the-trainer programs.
• Possession or willingness to obtain a Commercial Driver’s License (CDL) depending on fleet requirements.
• Flexibility to travel for multi-market training initiatives as needed.
