Utility Locator

About the Role

USIC, a leading company in underground utility damage prevention, is seeking dedicated Utility Locators to join their Columbus, OH team. This position is ideal for individuals who enjoy working outdoors independently and are committed to safety and quality. As a Utility Locator, you will be responsible for accurately identifying and marking the locations of various underground utilities including telecommunications, electric, gas, water, and sewer systems. USIC performs over 84 million locates annually, showcasing their reputation for excellence and safety.

Key Responsibilities

• Safely and precisely locate underground infrastructure such as telecommunications, electric power lines, cable TV, gas, water, and sewer systems.
• Conduct thorough searches in designated areas, properly marking utility locations, completing required documentation, and capturing photographs of each locate.
• Work independently in the field during daytime hours with a company-provided vehicle, using advanced ticket and claims management software.
• Meet a typical 48-hour turnaround for locates, which may require working the day after holidays, some weekends, overtime, on-call shifts including nights and weekends depending on business demands.

Qualifications and Requirements

• Capability and willingness to work outside in various weather conditions; prior outdoor work experience is advantageous.
• Comfort with and proficiency in using technology in the field.
• Availability to work overtime, weekend, and on-call shifts as needed.
• Ability to pass a drug screening due to the safety-sensitive nature of the role.
• Possession of a valid driver’s license with a clean driving record.
• Physical ability to work in confined spaces, as well as walk, bend, and lift up to 75 pounds.
• Visual ability to distinguish colors commonly used for wiring and underground utility marking.
• Competence to read, comprehend, and reference locate tickets, maps, and blueprints.
• Effective verbal communication skills for interacting with coworkers, customers, contractors, and homeowners.
