Role Overview

HBK Engineering is recruiting two Utility Locators for the northwest and western suburbs of Chicago. This role involves identifying and marking underground utilities through specialized tools, standards, and methods, including the use of locating devices and utility maps. The job requires working outdoors in all weather conditions, verifying the presence and accuracy of underground client facilities within set digging zones, and serving as a liaison between the company and clients during utility locating operations.

Key Responsibilities

  • Locate and mark underground utilities utilizing industry-standard tools and practices.
  • Cross-reference onsite conditions with existing documentation to identify inaccuracies or omissions.
  • Confirm the comprehensive presence of client facilities within defined excavation areas.
  • Investigate and document any damages encountered for compliance and record-keeping purposes.
  • Monitor and safeguard client infrastructure as directed for safety and security.
  • Understand contractor installation methods to support coordinated project activities.
  • Act as a communication conduit between HBK and clients during utility locating projects.
  • Review and verify design drawings prepared by others to ensure correctness.
  • Maintain and perform basic care on locating equipment.
  • Navigate safely through construction sites, public roads, and parkways.
  • Effectively communicate with the public, company representatives, contractors, and customers.
  • Keep meticulous records and reports of all locating activities.

Candidate Requirements

  • High school diploma or GED certification.
  • Possess a valid driver’s license with a clean record.
  • Experience working outdoors in varying weather conditions is essential.
  • Prior experience in underground utility locating is preferred.
  • Ability to work independently with minimal oversight.
  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills for effective stakeholder engagement.
  • Good organizational aptitude to manage diverse tasks concurrently.
  • Familiarity with safe worksite protocols.
  • Background in construction and installation of below-grade infrastructure.
  • Knowledge of and experience with standard utility designs and complex urban underground utilities.
  • Experience serving as client liaison and reviewing design drawings.
  • Proficiency with industry standard locating tools and basic maintenance.
  • Comfort with basic communications and technical devices.
  • Physical ability to move on construction sites and public infrastructure areas, including lifting up to 75 pounds and maintaining physical postures such as standing, kneeling, or sitting for prolonged periods.
  • Necessary hand-eye coordination for operating computers and measurement instruments.

Compensation

The anticipated annual pay for this position ranges from $19,000 to $23,000 depending on qualifications and experience.
