Job description
Position Overview
The Utility Locator is tasked with detecting and marking underground utility lines to facilitate safe excavation and construction processes. Using specialized detection devices, maps, and work directives, the role ensures accurate identification of underground infrastructure to prevent damage, maintain public safety, and assist field teams with reliable locate services.
Primary Responsibilities
- Execute underground facility locates adhering to company, state, and utility standards.
- Interpret maps, blueprints, GIS data, and work orders to trace utility routes.
- Utilize locating tools such as transmitters, receivers, and toners to mark underground utilities accurately.
- Record all locating work through sketches, notes, photographs, GPS data, and finalized work orders.
- Handle routine, emergency, high-priority locate requests, and re-marking tasks promptly.
- Communicate effectively with contractors, homeowners, utility providers, and internal departments.
- Maintain functionality and cleanliness of equipment, tools, and company vehicles.
- Perform all duties in line with OSHA regulations, 811 guidelines, and state One-Call requirements to uphold safety standards.
- Promptly report any mismarking, risk of damage, safety hazards, or issues potentially affecting service.
- Collaborate with team members and support field operations as necessary.
- Carry out additional assignments or special projects as requested.
Performance Indicators
- Accuracy and quality of locates as measured through audits.
- Achievement of zero preventable utility damages.
- Completion rate and timeliness of ticket processing.
- Compliance with safety regulations and maintenance of incident-free operations.
- Precision in documentation including photographs, notes, and verification of mapping data.
- Customer and contractor satisfaction rates.
Qualifications and Requirements
- Minimum of high school diploma or GED.
- Preferred experience in utility locating, construction, telecommunications, gas, water, or electrical sectors.
- Familiarity with One-Call systems, 811 regulations, and underground utility networks is advantageous.
- Valid driver’s license required.
Working Environment and Physical Demands
- Work primarily outdoors in diverse weather conditions.
- Exposure to construction zones, traffic, and moving machinery.
- Tasks involve working on both private and public rights-of-way.
- May require responding to after-hours or emergency locate tickets.
- Engage regularly with contractors, homeowners, utility firms, project managers, and internal crews.
- Physical ability to stand, bend, walk long distances, work in trenches or confined spaces, and lift up to 50 lbs.
- Capable of operating hand tools and locating equipment with manual dexterity and good visual acuity.
Safety and Compliance
This role carries significant safety responsibilities, requiring strict adherence to company safety policies, OSHA standards, and client protocols. The employee must consistently utilize appropriate PPE, operate vehicles and equipment safely, maintain certifications and licenses, participate in required training and testing, and report unsafe conditions or behaviors. Failure to comply with safety requirements may lead to disciplinary actions, including possible termination.
