About the Role and the Department
The Regional Municipality of Wood Buffalo's Public Works Department is seeking a dependable and skilled Transit Hostler to join their Transportation Services team in Fort McMurray, Alberta. This department handles vital community functions including road upkeep, fleet management, and snow removal. The Hostler plays a key role in ensuring the municipality's transit vehicles are ready, safe, and clean for daily service, helping to keep the region running efficiently.
Key Responsibilities
- Manage fleet vehicle placement and maintain the daily parking matrix to ensure buses are properly positioned for scheduled routes.
- Empty fare boxes and monitor vehicle status within the fleet yard, collaborating with dispatch as necessary.
- Conduct fueling operations and top up fluids such as transmission oil, engine oil, coolant, windshield washer fluid, and urea.
- Report any mechanical or service defects promptly to supervisors.
- Operate transit vehicles as needed to position them in accordance with the parking matrix.
- Perform interior cleaning duties including sweeping, garbage removal, disinfecting operator areas, floors, walls, ceilings, windows, and handling lost-and-found items according to protocols.
- Occasionally remove hazardous materials following established safety procedures.
- Carry out minor mechanical repairs such as replacing bulbs, wiper blades, mirrors, repairing tires, greasing components, and changing oils.
- Complete associated paperwork and enter data accurately in the system.
Qualifications and Skills
- High school diploma or equivalent (GED) required.
- At least two years of experience servicing fleet vehicles, including fueling, fluid checks, cleaning, and minor mechanical repairs.
- Ability to read and interpret policies, manuals, and safety documents.
- Capability to follow verbal and written instructions precisely.
- Skilled in prioritization and time management under pressure with multiple deadlines.
- Reliable, punctual, and attentive to detail.
- Knowledge of safe work practices, hazard recognition, and appropriate use of personal protective equipment.
- Competence working collaboratively within a team environment.
- Basic computer proficiency for entering work order data and related functions.
- Familiarity with basic hand tools.
- Must hold a valid Class 3 Operator’s License with Q-endorsement (Air Brakes); Class 2 license is considered an asset.
- Ability and willingness to work outdoors in all weather conditions.
- Must submit a criminal record check and be medically fit to perform assigned duties continuously.
- Immunizations are strongly advised for tasks involving unsanitary conditions.
Working Conditions and Compensation
- Permanent full-time position with 80 hours bi-weekly, working four 10-hour shifts per week.
- Starting rate at $40.83 per hour, increasing to $48.03 per hour upon completion of probation.
- Additional bi-weekly cost of living adjustment of $480.
- Role requires adherence to all municipal health and safety policies and active participation in safety programs.
