Role Overview
This role involves enhancing departmental productivity by ensuring that all tooling is maintained and repaired to the highest mechanical and electrical standards.
Key Responsibilities
- Perform tool inspections as scheduled to verify correct inserts, date stamps, and production standards, including cavity finishes and storage condition issues.
- Respond rapidly to press breakdowns indicated by Mattec, minimizing machine downtime through repairs or replacement of parts such as stuck fittings, cavity and core polishing, seized ejection components, angle pins, or wear plates.
- Conduct insert changes before tooling use or while in the press, involving removal and replacement of cores, shells, and inserts to create specific parts like socket/spigot components.
- Carry out comprehensive tool servicing including full disassembly, inspection for wear, repair or replacement of worn components, and verifying the final product quality.
- Log tools with issues using red-tags to facilitate assessment and repair where feasible.
- Fabricate new tooling components such as angle pins, core pins, milling locking blocks, and other small parts.
- Evaluate tooling and moulded/extruded fittings to identify and address quality deficiencies.
- Perform changes to date and engraving pads as necessary.
- Replace or repair damaged or malfunctioning hot runner parts and execute rebuilds.
- Test tooling hydraulics including water testing and repairing cylinder seals; coordinate with Maintenance & Production as required.
- Disassemble, repair, polish, machine, and rebuild extrusion tooling to meet production quality standards.
Qualifications and Skills Required
- Proficiency with conventional machine tools such as lathes, milling machines, surface grinders, cylindrical grinders, and band saws; skilled in bench work and hand grinding.
- Ability to measure and inspect components accurately while interpreting engineering drawings.
- Understanding of metallurgical principles and material strength.
- Experience executing preventative maintenance on production tooling.
- Familiarity with precision measurement tools including micrometers, dial test indicators, height gauges, bore micrometers, and other gauges.
- Capability to plan and perform complex machine and bench operations related to the construction, modification, fitting, assembly, installation, maintenance, and repair of specialized tooling, molds, gauges, and equipment.
- Skilled at working from samples, rough sketches, drawings, or verbal instructions to develop tooling.
- Experience with onsite injection mould or extrusion tooling operations.
- Completion of an apprenticeship training in toolmaking.
Compensation and Benefits
- Annual remuneration of £42,742.
- Five-day workweek, Monday to Friday, rotating through day, afternoon, and night shifts.
