Technical Specialist

Overview

This position offers a pivotal role in delivering expert technical assistance, staff training, and operational oversight within a live data centre environment, ensuring uninterrupted 24/7/365 support of critical systems. The Technical Specialist is instrumental in emergency responses, ongoing system maintenance, and the continual education of personnel, managing daily planning and prioritization of vital tasks across the site. Documentation preparation and validation, including subcontractor related paperwork aligned with annual schedules, fall under this role’s purview, ensuring process consistency across multiple locations.

Responsibilities

• Provide hands-on technical support and proactive monitoring to guarantee continuous operation of vital systems.
• Lead both planned and reactive maintenance activities in compliance with the DFM platform.
• Manage and prioritize all maintenance and operational activities within the data centre in coordination with operations teams.
• Evaluate and approve subcontractor Risk Assessments and Method Statements, managing work permit processes.
• Oversee daily facility operations and live activities, supervising contractors and vendors to ensure conformity with safety and procedural standards.
• Conduct technical training sessions for staff and organize regular scenario-based readiness drills.
• Contribute to the development and review of Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs), Emergency Operating Procedures (EOPs), and Methods of Procedures (MOPs), ensuring team involvement in operational exercises.
• Keep accurate logs of shifts, work orders, and system performance using DFM and other documentation tools.
• Promote adherence to health and safety practices, enforce personal protective equipment usage, and escalate any safety issues.
• Assist with emergency responses and commissioning activities as needed.

Qualifications and Expertise

• Possess a relevant trade qualification such as Electrician certification or a degree in Electrical or Mechanical Engineering.
• Demonstrate solid electrical expertise, including work with UPS systems, MV/LV electrical distribution, standby generators, and SCADA/BMS platforms.
• Exhibit flexibility in working hours to meet business and operational requirements.
• Proficient in Microsoft Office Suite, particularly Excel, Word, Outlook, and PowerPoint.
• Strong communication skills for client interactions and managing stakeholder expectations under pressure.
• Advanced problem-solving capabilities with live critical equipment.
• Excellent organizational skills including planned preventative maintenance scheduling and coordination.
• Proven experience within live data centres or other mission-critical operational facilities.
• Familiar with asset lifecycle management, PPM maintenance strategies, End of Life planning, and CMMS/change management systems.
• Authorization or willingness to obtain HV/MV switching authorisation.

Technical Skills

• Experience with MV standby generators and related controls.
• Knowledge of UPS systems operation.
• Expertise in MV/LV electrical distribution and switchgear.
• Familiarity with BMS/SCADA monitoring and control systems.
