Job description

About Moshtix and Universe

Moshtix leads ticketing for live music and festivals in Australia and New Zealand, operating independently though part of Ticketmaster. Universe, headquartered in Toronto, provides a self-serve global ticketing platform specializing in timed-entry events and complex capacity management. The Technical Lead role is based in Auckland, reporting to the Moshtix engineering team, and focuses primarily on collaborating closely with Universe’s teams to integrate and enhance both platforms.

Role Overview

As a Technical Lead, you will helm engineering efforts on Universe's platform from design through release and support. The position involves hands-on leadership including writing and reviewing code, architectural planning, fostering team growth, and guiding AI adoption in development workflows. You will bridge teams and time zones between Auckland and Toronto, enabling smooth asynchronous collaboration and delivering scalable, high-quality software.

Key Responsibilities

  • Drive technical strategy and delivery for a cross-functional team focused on Universe initiatives.
  • Architect and develop new products and features while maintaining legacy systems pragmatically.
  • Write, review and pair-program production code setting high standards for quality, testing, and performance.
  • Lead API design and documentation (contract-driven, including protobuf/gRPC, GraphQL) to enable parallel development across time zones.
  • Identify shared capabilities between Moshtix and Universe platforms and make strategic build vs buy decisions.
  • Collaborate closely with Universe engineering and product teams globally and represent APAC perspectives in planning and architectural reviews.
  • Foster a high-performing, positive engineering culture, mentor engineers, and handle hiring processes.
  • Manage incident responses, maintain platform stability under high demand, and participate in on-call rotations.
  • Adhere to company policies around change management, quality, safety, and environmental standards.

Technical Environment

The Universe stack is transitioning from Ruby on Rails to a service-oriented architecture using TypeScript, Node.js, Next.js, Go, Kafka, Postgres, MongoDB, gRPC, GraphQL, and Kubernetes with strong monitoring tools. Moshtix uses ASP.NET C#, Node.js/TypeScript, React, GraphQL APIs, AWS services, and modern CI/CD pipelines.

Working Hours and Travel

  • Owing to significant time zone differences between Auckland and Toronto (16-18 hours), work requires overlap including early mornings or late evenings on occasion.
  • Flexible work arrangements accommodate these needs with adjusted work hours.
  • Occasional international travel to Toronto may be expected.

AI Integration

AI tools form an integral part of the development lifecycle, accelerating progress while maintaining human accountability. The Technical Lead will guide the team in effective, responsible AI usage in engineering.

Qualifications and Skills

  • 7+ years of software development experience with at least 2 years in technical leadership.
  • In-depth full-stack expertise in TypeScript/JavaScript with Node.js and React; familiarity with Next.js is advantageous.
  • Professional competence in additional languages such as Go, Ruby, or C#.
  • Experience building and scaling distributed cloud-based systems (AWS/GCP preferred) using event-driven architectures with Kafka or similar tools.
  • Strong API design capabilities across REST, GraphQL, and gRPC/protobuf.
  • Proficiency with relational and NoSQL databases such as Postgres, MSSQL, MongoDB, DynamoDB, and caching layers.
  • Daily experience with AI-assisted coding tools like GitHub Copilot and Cursor, plus the critical review of AI outputs.
  • Established practices in testing, continuous integration and deployment, and observability (Jest, Playwright, GitHub Actions, Argo CD, Docker, Kubernetes, Grafana).
  • Proven track record of modernizing legacy systems without disrupting production.
  • Excellent communication skills with ability to write clear RFCs, design documents, and manage asynchronous handoffs.
  • Experience collaborating across multiple time zones effectively.
  • Eligibility to work in New Zealand.

Preferred Experience

  • Background in ticketing, e-commerce, or handling high-traffic event sales.
  • Knowledge of timed-entry, scheduling, capacity or reservation systems.
  • Familiarity with payment systems and PCI DSS compliance.
  • Experience in languages such as Go, Rust, or Elixir.
  • Understanding of CDN/edge platforms like Fastly.
  • Experience designing large language model (LLM) features or agentic workflows.

Behavioral Competencies

  • Lead by example demonstrating professionalism, humility, and trust-building.
  • Work collaboratively across continents fostering open communication and knowledge sharing.
  • Take ownership with clear expectations and reliable delivery, including AI-assisted work.
  • Advocate for pragmatic, responsible use of AI to increase efficiency and value.
  • Commit to continuous learning and encourage team growth in evolving technologies.
  • Apply pragmatic problem-solving to complex scaling challenges, balancing alternatives carefully.
  • Organize workload self-directedly across multiple priorities and stakeholders.
  • Understand domain nuances of live music and timed-entry ticketing to guide technical decisions.

Culture and Values

Moshtix offers a start-up energy within a global company, fostering trust, autonomy, and continuous improvement through knowledge sharing and team-focused attitudes. The culture emphasizes collective success, humility, inclusion, and open communication.

The company is committed to diversity and inclusion, providing support to balance work-life commitments and encouraging applications from all qualified individuals regardless of gender, race, or other personal characteristics.
